Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Venezuela and Syria

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Commenting on the Trump regime’s coop attempt in Venezuela, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (MZ below) said his mid-February remarks sounded like he was speaking as “president of the Western Hemisphere.”

He wants legitimate governments in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua replaced by US controlled puppet regimes, aiming for three more hemispheric imperial trophies.

Long forgotten are Trump’s inaugural address remarks, saying: “We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world,” adding:

“(W)e do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first. We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone.”

The above is more proof that all politicians lie. Believe nothing they say. Rare exceptions prove the rule. Trump proved time and again that nothing he says is credible. Once a serial liar, always one.

Warmongering extremists run his geopolitical agenda. Input in crafting Latin American policy is gotten from fascist Cuban and Venezuelan ex-pats in south Florida.

The facade of Colombia’s Foreign Ministry quotes Simon Bolivar, saying: “Each nation has the right to choose its government at its own discretion and the others must respect this choice.”

The nation’s narco/terrorist regime mocks the rule of law and respect for the sovereignty of other nations, operating in cahoots with Washington’s imperial agenda.

MZ commented on Venezuela ahead of US-staged weekend violence related to its Trojan horse “aid” stunt, saying the following:

“Developments in Venezuela have reached a critical point. A dangerous large-scale provocation is scheduled for February 23: (a forced) crossing of the border (attempt) by the so-called humanitarian convoy.”

“It is fraught with a clash of the supporters and opponents of the current government and provides a convenient pretext for removing the current legitimate President from power by force.”

Washington is “preparing this provocation…(including) the transfer of US special forces and equipment closer to Venezuela.”

Russian intelligence indicates that “the US and its NATO allies (may) purchase…weapons and ammunition for their subsequent transfer to the Venezuelan opposition forces.”

“These include…large-caliber machine-guns, under-barrel and automatic grenade launchers, mobile air defense systems, and ammunition for small arms and artillery weapons of different designation.”

“This is called preparations for the delivery of humanitarian aid. Under the plan, the cargo is to be delivered via the territory of a neighboring country in several consignments in early March by transport aircraft of an international freight company” - connected to the CIA.

The Trump regime “is deliberately escalating tensions everywhere. The world is being persistently told to believe that there is no way back.”

“Once again, the same phrase is being used: ‘He must go.’ As we see it, Washington is ready to go the whole way in” in trying to topple Maduro forcefully.

The Trump regime scheme flagrantly violates international, US, and Venezuelan constitutional law - including by calling on the Bolivarian military to betray the nation’s leadership.

MZ responded strongly to Trump’s abuse of power, saying he and others in Washington going along with this scheme “have no right whatsoever to speak about the legitimacy or the lack of legitimacy of anything in this life.”

My response to MZ, Vladimir Putin, Sergey Lavrov and other Russian officials is why do you persist in calling rogue state America, wanting all sovereign independent governments toppled, Russia’s “partner” - its sworn enemy!

The US scheme is far more pernicious than the fate of one country. At stake are world peace, stability, and security, along with nations safe and fit to live in - most of all humanity’s survival, free from the threat of possible nuclear war able to kill us all.

MZ: If the worst of what Russia sees developing toward Venezuela “materialize(s), this would mean the rise of US aggressive foreign policy to a new level – the road of military venture,” adding:

“But this is a downward path that will trigger a sharp escalation of tensions and confrontation in the world. What will come next?”

Latin and Central America alone have much to lose potentially from the “brazen policy of the United States.” Russia strongly supports the sovereign rights of all nations, along with peace, equity and justice.

Commenting on endless US war in Syria, MZ noted the unresolved status of terrorist-infested Idlib province, saying numerous ceasefire violations persist, including in the so-called de-escalation zone, adding:

“Residential neighborhoods in Aleppo” and elsewhere in the country’s north are shelled by US-supported terrorists “on a daily basis” - using US, other Western, and Israeli weapons and munitions.

The US-controlled Rukban refugee camp in southern Syria infested with ISIS and other US-supported terrorists remains an unresolved festering sore. Around 40,000 Syrian civilians are trapped and abused as human shields.

The northern Syria al-Hawl refugee camp gets scant attention. “Dozens of people there have already succumbed to overcrowding, poor sanitary conditions and shortages of food and medicine. A case of leprosy in the camp was reported,” MZ explained.

Endless war in Syria rages because the US rejects resolution. Eight years of aggression could be followed by eight more - more war in Iraq and elsewhere along with it.
