What is really the value of information?
Information can save your life! It can also save you time and money.. “If I had only known..”
But something about our culture disregards the value of information. We are even hostile to it.
So if a Tsunami was coming would you want to know? Of course many would say ‘yes’ (but not all!) — but if they have to pay $10 for the development of an early warning system, few would. Here’s where custodians like the government come in, forcing us to make good financial decisions we wouldn’t otherwise make as individuals.
Then there’s the camp who will say “Yes I’d like to know, but how do you convince people you know a Tsunami is coming?” – and therein lies the rub. This is the ‘paradox of education’ – in order to see the value of information you first need to read the information and understand it.
But those who are ignorant and apathetic will disregard information as a ‘waste of time’ and they ‘don’t need to know’. Well in the extreme case of the Tsunami, any rational person
should understand the point here, if there is an imminent threat of danger to life or property, this information is valuable. This is why governments around the world invest time and money building ‘early warning systems’ for natural and social disasters.
In a world where information is changing the way we live, which is all connected thr
ough the internet, information is now more valuable than ever. Fortunately, it’s cheap!
