(GlobalIntelHub.com – New York, NY) 9/9/2019 — We never would have guessed that the largest and most poorly planned construction projects are going on in downtown New York City (NYC) known as “Manhattan” or “The City” to the locals. Before digging further into details we have to credit John Young for breaking this story with impeccable research on his site cryptome.org a site normally about Cryptography and various intelligence activities.
First, let’s summarize what’s going on. Just like many urban areas, NYC is going through a massive construction boom. And as you can imagine, firms are shoving building permits through like square pegs being shoved down round holes, without any solid scrutiny by engineers. And this isn’t an isolated case or an isolated firm, there are hundreds of upon hundreds of examples. This is wrong in many ways, but mostly what’s scary is how the world is drifting into an Idiocracy style future where Generation Idiot is cutting corners and not doing things right. On a small anecdotal aside, author spent the weekend in North Carolina talking to 2 middle aged construction workers over a BBQ, who were complaining over several cases of Bud Light about how they get paid $40/hr because it’s so hard to find good workers. They claimed “Back in my time, if you made a mistake you went back and fixed it, and made it right. Now no one cares, that’s why projects take so long.”
This conversation prompted this article, because the fear of living in a future where engineers take a back seat; or worse – there are no engineers and everything is designed by emotional ego maniacs! Take a look at an example of this phenomenon in the 161 Maiden Lane lawsuit:
121185680-161-Maiden-Lane-Lawsuit
A contractor who worked on a lower Manhattan condo tower—which is now leaning slightly—is suing the project’s developer, accusing the firm of cutting corners to curb costs, according to court documents. The 58-story tower at 161 Maiden Lane, also known as 1 Seaport, is leaning north by about three inches because the skyscraper’s foundation is defective, according to a March 22 lawsuit filed by the project’s contractor, Pizzarotti, in New York State Supreme Court. The suit was first reported by the Commercial Observer. But a representative for Fortis Property Group, the project’s developer, points the finger at Pizzarotti for the leaning lower Manhattan tower, and says the contractor improperly poured a concrete slab and failed to account for the settling of the foundation. Pizzarotti is now in “panic mode” and filed the suit in a last-ditch effort to avoid damages, according to the Fortis spokesperson. Don’t worry we are providing the complete list of all the documentation at the end of the article this is just to get an idea of what’s going on. A few inches may not seem like a lot, but it’s enough to make a building crumble. And if a foundation is off by a few inches, the top can be off by a few feet. This is not sloppy work this is a structural design flaw – but it’s not likely a mistake. This isn’t rocket science. They must have intentionally cut corners for extra profit.
The problem with inflation, speaking macro-economically, it creates rot. Inflation is seen often as prices rising, and certainly in the most common examples as discussed publicly. But there is a rotten side of inflation, and that is cutting corners and deteriorating quality. Think of the deteriorating proportions of potato chips in the bags. Prices don’t always rise for potato chips, but the number of chips in the bag gets less and less each year. There was a time when a bag was full to the top with chips. Now you’re lucky to get a bag half full. Why do they sell such big bags? To appear to the consumer at point of purchase that you are getting more for your $1.99 – it’s all in the optics.
Another factor is the deterioration of quality, which means – using less expensive and more crappy ingredients. This is OK with potato chips, but not OK when we are building skyscrapers in NYC.
Inflation didn’t force these corrupt contractors and builders to cut corners, but it does put pressure on all businesses with tight margins. Cost of materials and cost of labor has been skyrocketing. They can’t keep rising construction costs with all those costs, so what do they do? Don’t bother with the extra set of pilings. Hire illegals instead of trained experienced Americans. Get Chinese materials for pennies on the dollar. Don’t pay workers for overtime. The list goes on and on. But when you save on engineering, the end result is not good. Leaning, sinking, deteriorating buildings. To be fair, NYC is not the only city with this problem, San Francisco has faced a major building sinking called Millenium Tower for some time:
All sides in the Millennium Tower debacle appear to be nearing an agreement on a $100 million-plus fix to stop the 58-story high-rise from sinking further — but at least part of the building’s tilt will probably remain. The latest plan calls for drilling piles into bedrock from the sidewalk on the building’s southwest corner. The proposal would be less extensive and intrusive than the plan floated in April, which called for drilling as many as 300 micro-piles to bedrock through the building’s concrete foundation.
It’s like fixing a canoe with duck tape only on a larger scale. While some may think these are irrelevant nuances, the fact is that America wouldn’t be what it is or has been with such shoddy engineering. In other words, there was better engineering and construction 100 years ago. Buildings didn’t fall apart.
You may be asking what is the solution, where to invest in the next hot Pre IPO solving this problem? So far we don’t have an answer, but here’s a good model to go by, made in Switzerland:
New York certainly has its set of challenges, and this is certainly not a problem unique to the city. However, due to the demand for buildings in Manhattan, it seems to have been exaggerated the most here. The list of references here is just astounding.
Perhaps this is contributing to NYC’s property market that keeps cooling.
Although of course, companies like Bloomberg that have more than skin in the NYC game aren’t going to flat out admit it: no investor no matter how wealthy wants to buy a condo in a leaning building, even if it’s only 3 inches.
If this sounds like a crazy ‘conspiracy theory’ why then, to buildings like the Cunard Building, many of which are well over 100 years old, stand strong? (Cunard was completed in 1921 so it’s just shy of the century status).
Interestingly, one significant fact used as an axiom in the hypothesis for the WTC 9/11 Demolition Theory is that the buildings were not designed properly and if 9/11 hadn’t happened, they would have needed a multi-billion dollar overhaul. This was due to a controversial design and use of materials not tested in such high buildings. Proponents of this theory claim that this is why the owner of the building so easily complied with the plan to demolish the buildings on purpose and get an insurance check, as a big insurance fire.
Is there a hidden motive behind the design & engineering of buildings in NYC? This issue is obviously the tip of the iceberg and requires a deeper dig. But who are we to ask these questions, if we ourselves are not engineers? This group is a good start: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architects_%26_Engineers_for_9/11_Truth
