Trump Expected to Decertify, Not Derail, Iran Nuclear Deal

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.orgHome – Stephen Lendman)

He’ll announce his decision on Friday – ahead of an October 15 deadline to report to Congress on whether Iran is complying with the nuclear deal or not.

The IAEA certified its full compliance multiple times. Trump lied calling the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) “the worst deal ever negotiated.”

He’s likely ignorant of its provisions, for sure never read them. He’s beholden to Anglo/Zionist interests, risking confrontation with Iran.

Netanyahu and other Israeli Ziofascists want it, eager for joint US/IDF war on the country. Trump will likely discuss his strategy on confronting Iran in broad terms.

Barring a last minute change of heart, he’s expected to sharply criticize Iran’s nuclear program, entirely peaceful with no military component, aiming as well at its legitimate ballistic missile development, along with falsely claiming its government supports terrorism – the scourge Washington and its rogue allies sponsor.

Reportedly Trump told foreign leaders and congressional members he won’t recertify the JCPOA or walk away from it. He’ll let Congress decide on whether to impose tough new sanctions – illegal when unilaterally imposed.

On Wednesday, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini stressed Iran’s full compliance with the deal, adding “(w)e have the international community strongly behind (its) full implementation…”

“Once that we have an agreement that is functioning, that is working, that is delivering, the worst thing you can do is trying to dismantle it, also because you would show the way to others that making deals actually is not worth it, because the message that America would send to the rest of the world is that (it) cannot be trusted.”

Washington supported the deal two years ago. A Security Council resolution unanimously approved it.

“If we pass the message that with every change of administration in Washington or elsewhere deals are thrown away and renegotiated, no one would negotiate with any administration ever and any deal would be exposed to be renegotiated every term,” said Mogherini.

“This is not the way of making deals, not in foreign policy, not in private businesses and I think Trump understands that perfectly well.”

The JCPOA is an international agreement accepted by the world community, Israel and the Trump administration isolated in opposition.

It will not be renegotiated. Other P5+1 countries and Iran won’t permit it. Head of Tehran’s Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi said his country is considering “various scenarios” in response to whatever Trump announces on Friday.

Iran wants the deal preserved, “but not at any price,” he explained. The EU shares that position, but it’s unclear if “it can resist” US pressure.

Only two options exist, he added – either all parties to the deal stay committed to it or they withdraw. “There is no third alternative,” he stressed.

Trump’s hostility to the JCPOA failed to cite anything suggesting Iranian noncompliance.

Hardline US actions toward Tehran have been ongoing for nearly four decades – worst of all under Bush/Cheney and Trump.
