Possible Trump Regime Grand Bargain with Russia?

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Washington has been hostile toward Moscow for over a century. Rare periods of better relations were short-lived.

America wants all sovereign independent countries transformed into US vassal states - Russia, China and Iran its main targets, improved bilateral relations with them not a US option, seeking dominance over all nations.

Former senior US war department official Alexander Vershbow earlier served as Bush/Cheney’s ambassador to Russia, later as NATO’s de facto chief until October 2016.

US-installed secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg is a convenient potted plant like his alliance predecessors, doing Washington’s bidding.

Vershbow is militantly hostile to Russia, earlier calling the Kremlin “more an enemy than partner.” Diplomacy was never his long suit.

He’s an Atlantic Council “distinguished fellow for strategy and security.” Founded in 1961 to support US-dominated NATO’s killing machine, the AC is a neocon infested think tank, hostile to world peace, supporting endless US wars of aggression.

In a CIA house organ Washington Post op-ed, Vershbow slammed the idea of rapprochement with Russia, expressing opposition to Trump attempting to strike a “grand (bilateral) bargain” with Putin through summit talks, calling the notion a “grand illusion.”

A litany of tired old Big Lies followed, falsely accusing Moscow of invented wrongdoing.

Russia did not “illegally annex…Crimea.” No Russian aggression exists against Ukraine or any other countries, no occupation of foreign territories.

These unlawful actions are US specialties, wanting planet earth colonized, controlled, and exploited, not how Moscow operates, seeking cooperative relations with all nations.

Vershbow: “…Putin’s Russia has torn up the international rule book and firmly established itself as a revisionist power, undermining the basis for cooperation on European security” - a bald-faced lie!

Vershbow: “In Syria, Putin has not been fighting the Islamic State, but propping up Bashar al-Assad…and giving a strategic foothold to Iran, increasing the threat to Israel” - multiple bald-faced lies!

He turned truth on its head, accusing Putin of withdrawing from the INF Treaty and other agreements. Nothing of the sort happened. Putin’s word is his bond, unlike longstanding US duplicity, its regimes never to be trusted.

Numerous other Big Lies followed, revealing Verhsbow’s support for imperial ruthlessness, his militant Russophobia, his opposition to world peace and stability.

He’s right about one thing. The notion of a Trump initiated grand bargain with Putin for improved Russia/US relations is pure fantasy.

Overwhelming congressional opposition, along with regime hardliners in charge of Trump’s geopolitical agenda, puts it out of reach.

Nor is it attainable with other independent nations unwilling to surrender their sovereignty to America’s.

They’re all on Washington’s target list for regime change, what Vershbow failed to explain, along with silence about his rage for endless wars of aggression against invented enemies.
