In preparing America for nuclear attack during the Cold War years following World War II, thousands of US citizens became the innocent victims of over 4,000 secret and classified radiation experiments conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the Public Health Service (now the CDC), the National Institutes of Health, the Veterans Administration (VA), the CIA, and NASA.
Millions of people were exposed to radioactive fallout from the continental testing of more than 200 atmospheric and underground nuclear weapons, and from the hundreds of secret releases of radiation into the environment. Over 200,000 "atomic vets" who worked closely with nuclear detonations at the Nevada test site during the 1950s and 1960s were especially vulnerable to radiation fallout.
Also affected were the thousands of so-called "downwinders", who lived in nearby small towns in Nevada, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. These downwinders (along with the animal populations) suffered the worst cumulative radioactive effects of fallout, along with a contaminated environment teeming with radioactive food and farm products. The plight of these poor country people exposed to government-induced radiation sickness has been recorded in Carole Gallagher's remarkable photo-essay American Ground Zero: The Secret Nuclear War (The Free Press, 1993).
In reviewing declassified AEC records (now the Department of Energy) from the 1950s, Gallagher was shocked to discover one document that described the people downwind of the Nevada Test Site as "a low use segment of the population." Her shock at such callous bigotry caused her to eventually move West to research, investigate and document those who lived closest to the Test Site, as well as workers at the site, and soldiers repeatedly exposed to nuclear bombs during the military tests.
Disinformation and Nuclear Fallout
In the nuclear arms race, government doctors and scientists brainwashed the public into believing low dose radiation was not harmful. Some officials even tried to convince people that "a little radiation is good for you." Totally ignored was the knowledge that the radiation from nuclear fallout could lead to an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders, immune system disease, reproductive abnormalities, sterility, birth defects, and genetic mutations which could be passed on from generation to generation. The full extent of this radiation damage to the American public during the Cold War years will never be known.
A secret AEC document, dated 17 April 1947, reveals that physicians were aware of these radiation hazards but simply ignored them. Under the title "Medical Experiments in Humans," the memorandum read: "It is desired that no document be released which refers to experiments with humans that might have an adverse effect on public opinion or result in legal suits. Documents covering such field work should be classified 'Secret'."
According to Gallagher, many downwinders testified that the Public Health Service officials told them that their 'neurosis' about the fallout was the only thing that would give them cancer, particularly if they were female. Women with severe radiation illness, hair loss, and badly burned skin, were clinically diagnosed in hospitals as "neurotic." Other severely ill women were diagnosed with "housewife syndrome." When Gallagher's investigation led her to ask a Department of Energy spokesperson about the AEC/DOE's practice of waiting until the wind blew towards Utah before testing nuclear bombs or venting radiation in order to avoid contaminating Las Vegas or Los Angeles, the unabashed and unconcerned official actually said on tape, "Those people in Utah don't give a shit about radiation."
Secret Radiation Experiments
Only recently, with the forced release of Top Secret documents, have details been revealed about the unethical and inhumane radiation studies conducted during the Cold War years from 1944 to 1974. The initial story broke in November 1993 in a series of articles in the Albuquerque Tribune which identified the names of 18 Americans secretly injected with plutonium, a key ingredient of the atomic bomb and one of the most toxic substances known to man. Some, but not all, of the patients were terminally ill. This horrifying story by journalist Eileen Welsome (who later won a Pulitzer Prize) unleashed a storm of nationwide protest prompting Department of Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary to order the release of secret files and documents pertaining to these Cold War experiments.
The extremely dangerous plutonium experiment was performed under the auspices of the government's Manhattan Project, which brought together a revered group of distinguished scientists to develop and test the atom bomb. The purpose of these secret experiments was to establish occupational standards for workers who would be producing plutonium and other radioactive ingredients for the nuclear energy industry.
Some of the classified government experiments included:
The Atomic Energy Commission
In 1995 the Energy Department admitted to over 430 radiation experiments conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission between the years 1944 and 1974. Over 16,000 people were radiated, some of whom did not know the health risks or did not give consent.
These experiments were designed to help atomic scientists understand the human hazards of nuclear war and radiation fallout. Because the entire nuclear arms buildup was classified secret, these experiments were all stamped secret and allowed to take place under the banner of protecting "national security."
Amazingly, these clandestine studies were conducted at the most prestigious medical institutions and colleges, including the University of Chicago, the University of Washington, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and the previously mentioned universities.
Uranium Mine Workers
In addition to these radiation experiments, workers who mined uranium for the AEC in the Four Corners area of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, were exposed to radioactive dust during the 1940s up to the 1960s. Although AEC scientists and epidemiologists knew the dust in these poorly ventilated mines was contaminated with deadly radon gas which could easily cause death from lung cancer, this lifesaving information was never passed on to the miners, many of whom were Native Americans. As a result, many miners died prematurely of cancer of the lung.
Stewart Udall, an Arizona Congressman and lawyer who also served as Secretary of the Interior during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, represented the miners and their families in a class action lawsuit against the federal government for radiation injuries. In The Myths of August, Udall writes that some physicians who defended the decisions of the atomic establishment sought to justify these experiments by contending that little was known about the health risks associated with the various exposures. Others tried to put a positive face on tests conducted without obtaining informed consent by maintaining that these experiments nevertheless produced advances in medical knowledge. Some physicians argued that the conduct of the AEC doctors should be condoned because they were merely following the 'prevailing ethics' of the postwar period. When the miners' case finally came to trial in 1983, the federal court in Arizona dismissed the case by declaring the US government was immune from lawsuit.
Medical Ethics of the Cold War
How could these physician-experimenters ignore the sworn Hippocratic Oath promising that doctors will not harm their patients? Did they violate the Nuremberg Code of justice developed in response to the Nazi war crimes trials after World War II?
The Nuremberg Code includes 10 principles to guide physicians in human experimentation. In actuality, prior to the Nazi war crime tribunals, there was no written code for doctors; and lawyers defending the Nazi doctors tried to argue that similar wartime experiments were conducted with prisoners at the Illinois State Penitentiary, who were deliberately infected with malaria.
During the Nuremberg trials the AMA came up with its own ethical standards, which included three requirements: 1) voluntary consent of the person on whom the experiment is to be performed must be obtained; 2) the danger of each experiment must be previously investigated by animal experimentation; and 3) the experiment must be performed under proper medical protection and management.
The records now show that many victims of the government's radiation experiments did not voluntarily consent as required by the Code. As late as 1959, Harvard Medical School researcher Henry Beecher viewed the Code "as too extreme and not squaring with the realities of clinical research." Another physician said the Code had little effect on mainstream medical morality and "doubted the ability of the sick to understand complex facts of their condition in a way to make consent meaningful."
Writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1996, Jay Katz recalls an argument at Harvard Medical School in 1961 suggesting that the Code was not necessarily pertinent to or adequate for the conduct of research in the United States. Katz writes: "The medical research community found, and still finds, the stringency of the NC's first principle all too onerous." But patients in medical experiments expect the experiment to help them in some way - not to harm them! Patients also are often inclined to totally trust their physicians not to harm them. In The Nazi Doctors and the Nuremberg Code, Katz concludes that many doctors view the Code as "a good code for barbarians but an unnecessary code for ordinary physicians."
The President's Advisory Committee
In January 1994 President Clinton convened an Advisory Committee to investigate the accusations surrounding the human radiation experiments. In their final report presented to the president on 3 October, 1995, the Committee found that up to the early 1960s it was common for physicians to conduct research on patients without their consent.
The Committee's harshest criticism was reserved for those cases in which physicians used patients without their consent in experiments in which the patients could not possibly benefit medically. These cases included the 18 people injected with plutonium at Oak Ridge Hospital in Tennessee, the University of Rochester in New York, the University of Chicago, and the University of California at San Francisco, as well as two experiments in which seriously ill patients were injected with uranium, six at the University of Rochester and eleven at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The plutonium and uranium experiments undoubtedly put the subjects at increased risk for cancer in ten or twenty years' time.
The Final Report of the President's Advisory Committee is now available in The Human Radiation Experiments, published in 1996 by Oxford Press. Although the Committee studied the experiments in depth, there was no attempt to assess the damage done to individuals. In many cases, the names and records of the patients were no longer available, nor was there any easy way to identify how many experiments had been conducted, where they took place, and which government agencies sponsored them. The Department of Health and Human Services, the primary government sponsor of research, had long since discarded files on experiments performed decades ago.
The Committee discovered "the records of much of the nation's recent history had been irretrievably lost or simply could not be located" and "only the barest description remained" for the majority of the experiments.
The Department of Energy also claimed all the pertinent records of its predecessor, the AEC, had been destroyed during the 1970s, but in some cases as late as 1989. All CIA records are classified. When records of the top secret MKULTRA program (in which unwitting subjects were experimented upon with a variety of mind-altering drugs) were requested, the CIA explained that all pertinent records had been destroyed during the 1970s when the program became a national scandal.
Keeping Government Secrets
The Committee made clear that its story could not have been told if the government did not keep some records that were eventually retrieved and made public. However, federal records management law also provides for the routine destruction of older records. Thus, in the great majority of cases the loss or destruction of requested documents was a function of normal record-keeping practices.
The Committee was dismayed to report: "At the same time, however, the records that recorded the destruction of documents, including secret documents, have themselves been lost or destroyed." Thus, the circumstances of destruction (and indeed, whether documents were destroyed or simply lost) is often hard to ascertain.
In the Committee's judgment the AEC had repeatedly deceived the public by denying it had engaged in human experimentation, and by issuing cover stories to cover-up secret investigations, and by deliberately supplying incomplete information to people who participated in government-sponsored biomedical research. It was clear that once government information was "born secret" it often remained that way.
The Committee concludes: "The government has the power to create and keep secrets of immense importance to us all." Yet, without documents how can historians and other researchers uncover the truth about the government's clandestine activities? Where is the 'smoking gun' when secret records are systematically shredded or reported as 'lost'? We now know that many people were damaged during the government's Cold War period of secrets and lies. But how can we uncover the medical and scientific secrets that remain hidden in the still classified documents from 1974 up to the present?
In the absence of medical records and follow-up, the ultimate fate of individuals who willingly or unwillingly "volunteered" for these experiments is not known. The Committee simply did not have the time or the resources to review individual files and histories. In many instances only fragmentary information survives about these experiments; whether people were harmed in these experiments could not be ascertained.
Current Secret Biomedical Experimentation
The US has the world's largest arsenal of chemical and biological weapons. However, few people are aware of the covert biowarfare experiments conducted by various government agencies, particularly the military and the CIA.
For example, in August 1977 the CIA admitted to no less than 149 subprojects, including experiments to determine the effects of different drugs on human behaviour; work on lie-detectors, hypnosis, and electric shock; and the surreptitious delivery of drug-related materials. Forty-four colleges and universities were involved, along with fifteen research foundations, twelve hospitals or clinics, and three penal institutions. In the infamous MKULTRA mind-altering experiments, the victims were lured to hotel rooms for sexual encounters with prostitutes and were then drugged and monitored by CIA agents.
Military biowarfare attacks against unsuspecting Americans in the 1950s and 60s are a documented reality. The most notorious was a six-day US military bioattack on San Francisco in which clouds of potentially harmful bacteria were sprayed over the city. Twelve people developed pneumonia due to these infectious microbes, and one elderly man died from the bioattack.
In other secret attacks, bacteria were sprayed into New York City subway tunnels; into crowds at a Washington, D.C. airport; and onto highways in Pennsylvania. Biowarfare testing also took place in military bases in Virginia, in Key West, Florida, and off the coasts of California and Hawaii.
For 50 years the shameful details of the government's radiation experiments were kept secret from the public. In The Plutonium Files, Eileen Welsome notes the ethical horror that resulted from the melding of military and medical agendas during the Cold War. She credits the atomic bomb project's public relations machine for downplaying the fallout controversy, the illnesses of the atomic veterans, and the diseases of the downwinders. The government propagandists simply placed the blame on sudden wind shifts, misinformed scientists, the overactive imagination of aging soldiers, and even Communist propagandists.
Welsome concludes: "The web of deception and denial looks in retrospect like a vast conspiracy, but in actuality it was simply a reflection of the shared attitudes and beliefs of the scientists and the bureaucrats who were inducted into the weapons program at a time of national urgency and never abandoned their belief that nuclear war was imminent." She worries if what we have learned from the thousands of radiation experiment documents made public over the last several years will be remembered. Like the Holocaust and the Nazi crimes against humanity, the radiation experiments should never be forgotten.
In reviewing Welsome's book for the Los Angeles Times (2 January, 2000), Thomas Powers asks: "If the government lied about the danger of nuclear testing, can we trust them to tell us the truth about acid rain, global warming or the safety of deep storage for nuclear waste?"
Does Secret Medical Experimentation Continue?
To this day there are no adequate safeguards to protect people from secret government experimentation. Since the mid-1970s we have witnessed the spectacular rise of genetic engineering and molecular biology, as well as the concomitant outbreak of new and mysterious diseases like AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, the peculiar "Four Corners" lung disease discovered on Navajo land, and the appearance of unprecedented "emerging" viruses never before seen on the planet.
Investigators linking the possible origin of these diseases to the dangerous engineering of new microbes are often dismissed as paranoids and crackpots. The mysterious Persian Gulf War syndrome is yet another recent illness clouded in military and biologic secrecy, with the origin and cause still debated and the medical records of sick veterans often "lost" or otherwise unavailable. Not surprisingly, the same government institutions that funded the radiation experiments now largely control the research, the funding, and the cover stories pertaining to all these new diseases and viruses.
What is clear from studying the Committee's Final Report is that the medical and scientific professions collaborated with the government and the military to abuse and harm US citizens. In the process, the nuclear establishment literally got away with murder. And there is simply no end to the secrets that still emerge from the Cold War years that began 58 years ago with the Manhattan Project.
In January 2000, the government presented the results of a statistical study showing that atomic workers employed in the nuclear weapons industry during the Cold War were more likely to suffer a higher rate of cancer, due to their exposure to cancer-causing radiation and chemicals.
From the 1940s up to the present time, government lawyers and scientists have repeatedly rejected the claims of workers who became sick as result of nuclear radiation and exposure to deadly uranium, plutonium, and fluorine. As many as 600,000 workers in 14 nuclear weapons plants are now affected by the government's final admission of wrongdoing in exposing these people to cancer and other chronic illnesses.
According to a Los Angeles Times report, "workers told of spending years trying to get compensation payments from the state, of having to hire attorneys to get disability pay, of going to clinics that forced them to sign away rights to a portion of any future disability payment before they could be treated."
Kay Sutherland, a worker at the Hanford plutonium plant in central Washington State, told a hearing that "the people in this area have been forced into poverty because they've had to retire in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, too young to get a retirement, and too young to get Social Security. They fall through the cracks and they die." Sutherland has lost four of her five family members to disease, and has an enlarged liver and multiple tumours. She considers herself "a Holocaust survivor for the American Cold War."
How can we stop these nuclear and biological horrors, which have condemned thousands of innocent people to disease and death? Why must decades of government-sanctioned medical abuse be kept secret and covered-up by scientists and physicians who claim to be concerned about the health of the public?
One way to prevent abuse might be to bring the physician-scientist perpetrators of these experiments to justice in a court of law. However, unless the public is aroused, this is unlikely to happen.
Writing in the Columbia Journalism Review, Geoffrey Sea notes: "A startling fact about the experiments is that, despite the documentation of hundreds of cases of unethical conduct resulting in lasting damage to thousands of people, not a single physician or nurse, scientist or technician, policy maker or administrator has yet come forward to admit wrongdoing."
For over twenty years the law allowed the US Department of Defense (DoD) to use Americans as "guinea pigs." This law (the US code annotated Title 50, Chapter 32, Section 1520, dated 30 July, 1977) remained on the books until it was repealed under public pressure in 1998. The new and revised bill prohibits the DoD from conducting tests and experiments on humans, but allows "exceptions." One of the exceptions is that a test or experiment can be carried out for "any peaceful purpose that is related to a medical, therapeutic, pharmaceutical, agricultural, industrial, or research activity." Thus, the 1998 law has obvious loopholes which allow secret testing to continue. For details on the restrictions (and exceptions) for human testing for chemical and biological agents, consult the Gulf War Vets website.
Unethical and dangerous experimentation undoubtedly continues in secret up to the present time, ostensibly under the guise of "national security." Thus, it would seem prudent for patients to think twice before signing-up for government-sponsored medical studies, particularly at leading medical institutions. Enlightened patients might also view doctors (and scientists) with a healthy dose of skepticism, and a touch of paranoia.
As weird as all this sounds, it could save your life!

In some cases producers employ water, sugar and sometimes hydrochloric acid to ensure their wine has a uniform taste and consistency.
The research into the quality of the 1.5 billion bottles consumed in Britain, for tonight's Channel 4 programme Dispatches, also cast doubt on the reputation of Champagne, with one expert suggesting that 70 per cent was not worth the premium price.
Malcolm Gluck, author of The Great Wine Swindle, said: "Many, many wines are no better than a sort of alcoholic cola. You get artificial yeasts, enzymes, sugar, extracts, tannins, all sorts of things added."
Many cheaper wines have oak chips added to give the impression that they have been aged in a traditional barrel.
Some of the most well-known new world brands use milk and enzymes to make the wine less cloudy and ensure that the wine tastes the same from one batch to the next.
More than 60 Beaujolais producers are due in court later this year accused of disguising low-quality grapes with excessive amounts of sugar.
In Italy 70 million litres was seized and was found to comprise just 20 per cent wine, the remainder being water, sugar and ingredients such as acid and fertiliser, used to boost the alcohol content to achieve a higher price.
The investigation found traces of fungicide in leading Champagne brands and discovered that experts struggled to distinguish between a £6.99 sparkling wine and a Champange three times the price.
Jancis Robinson, the wine writer, told the programme: "From my point of view perhaps about 30 per cent of all champagne is worth the money."
The British wine industry has fought to retain an exemption from food and drink labelling rules which means it does not have to list the additives.
John Corbet-Milward, spokesman for the Wine and Spirits Trade Association, said it is possible for drinkers to find out what is in their wine by talking to the maker or importer.
He said the use of different ingredients in varying quantities makes it difficult for producers to come up with an accurate label.

Would some of their labels say, “Brewed with pure Rocky Mountain spring water, GMO corn syrup, and fish bladder”?
If you like to kick back now and then with a cold one, you may not have given much thought to what’s in the bottle or can. Perhaps you were reassured by ads with wholesome images of sparkling mountain streams and barley rippling in the breeze, or by slogans [1] like “Budweiser: The Genuine Article.”
The reality is far less appetizing. The list of legal additives [2] to beer includes:
You’re unlikely to see any of these industrial-sounding ingredients on a label, because listing ingredients in beer is voluntary. And when ingredients are listed, it may be a partial list—which is even more deceptive than having no list at all.
Several beers, for example, contain HFCS, most of which is genetically modified (GMO), and isinglass, a clarifying agent made from the swim bladder of fish [4]. But check most beer websites and they’ll tell you their “key ingredients” are “roasted, malted barley, hops, yeast, and water.” Perhaps the HFCS and isinglass were not “key” enough to merit inclusion on this list?
Some brands with less-than-wholesome ingredients:
The labeling regulations are confusing and capricious. Food is regulated by the FDA, and requires a Nutrition Facts panel, but alcohol is regulated by the US Treasury Department’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Unless it’s beer made with something other than malted barley, and then it’s regulated by the FDA and must carry a Nutrition Facts panel. States also have their own regulations, which can supersede those of TTB, but not of the FDA.
Marion Nestle, a nutrition professor at New York University, explained on her blog [5] why we still don’t know the ingredients in alcoholic beverages. In short, TTB has been procrastinating since 2007 on completing their rules for labeling of alcoholic beverages.
People with allergies to genetically modified corn are taking a chance when drinking beer, as there is no requirement that GMO ingredients be identified on the label. We told you early this year about the dangers of GMOs [6], and in 2011 about the dangers of sugar[7], especially fructose. So genetically modified fructose carries a one–two punch, and may be one of the more toxic foods that can be hiding in your food or drink—with nothing about it on the label.
Unfortunately for those with a sweet tooth, eschewing HFCS for plain old cane sugar may not be that much of an improvement. A recent study of mice fed a mixture of fructose and glucose showed that even moderate amounts of sugar shorten life span [8] (females fed sugar died twice as fast) and hamper reproduction (males were less likely to hold territory and sired fewer offspring).
While it certainly has its health benefits, and studies suggest that people who drink a little live a bit longer, alcohol—even without unsavory additives—has [9] more negatives than plusses. It introduces what is treated as a poison by your body and stresses the entire gastrointestinal system, from mouth to colon, making cancer possibly more likely, especially in the esophagus. It may increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and cirrhosis of the liver.
Not ready to give up the occasional brewski? According to the Food Babe [2], Sierra Nevada, Heineken, and Amstel Light are good choices, as they use only non-GMO grains and no artificial ingredients, stabilizers, or preservatives. German beers are subject to the “Reinheitsgebot” law mandating that beer be produced using only water, hops, yeast, malted barley, or wheat—you won’t have to guess what’s in them.
An obvious choice is certified organic beer, which cannot include GMOs and other harmful additives by law. And then there are the microbreweries. Many craft beer companies will give you a complete list of ingredients if you ask. Be warned, however: large beer companies are buying up microbreweries one by one, as Molson-Coors did with Blue Moon and Anheuser-Busch did with Goose Island Brewery.
The healthiest of all alcoholic beverages is not beer at all, but red wine. It naturally contains resveratrol [10], which appears to have anti-aging, cancer-preventing, cardio-protective, neuro-protective, and anti-diabetic effects. It’s also an anti-inflammatory and an antiviral to boot. As we noted in a recent article [11], red wine can also help clear bad bugs from your stomach. Cheers!

A British backpacker died after drinking methanol-tainted gin in Indonesia, the latest death from poisoned alcohol in the archipelago.
Cheznye Emmons, 23, from Essex, started feeling sick a few hours after drinking from a bottle labeled “gin” that she and her boyfriend had purchased from a local store.
Within days she had lost her eyesight and was taken to a hospital in Medan, Sumatra, where she was put in an induced coma.
Her parents, who had traveled to Indonesia to be by her bedside, made the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support machine on April 25.
"It just doesn't seem real – we're all just in shock,” Emmons’ older brother Michael was quoted by The Telegraph as saying.
"From what we understand, the shop would have poured the gin out of the original bottle and then replaced it with methanol.
"It was in the original bottle with the gin label on it.
"As far we're aware, the shop which sold the alcohol has been shut down and there's a police investigation.
"The British embassy is also looking into it."
Methanol is extremely poisonous and can cause blindness and death.
Media reports said high taxes had driven up the cost of wine and spirits in Indonesia, and unscrupulous shop owners try to “stretch the alcohol” by replacing it with a local spirit called arak, or adding methanol.
Emmons’ case is not unique.
The Courier Mail reported that an Australian man died in February after drinking a methanol-laced vodka mixer in Lombok. In December, an Australian schoolgirl was blinded after drinking a poisoned cocktail in Bali.

Radon daughters - The radioactive decay products of naturally occuring radon gas that can become attached to airborne dust particles.
Current research data on the effects of inhaled airborne particles from our environment provides more and more evidence of health problems directly related to dirty air. Studies show asthma and respiratory problems are irritated by high air particulate levels. Many cancers are found related to radon daughters and second hand cigarette smoke. Illness and allergies can be directly linked to volatile organic compounds (VOC) as well as airborne viruses, bacteria and spores.
Despite many programs directed at battling air pollution the most overlooked area is the removal of particles 10 microns or less in diameter. (A human hair is approximately 75 microns in diameter). Over 90% of air contaminants fall into this range.
Indoor air environments can present the greatest potential health risks as pollutant concentrations can be 8 to 10 times more toxic than outdoor air and we generally spend up to 90 % of our time indoors.
How Amaircare Works
Maximum air cleaning efficiency relies on two basic principles:
HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air)
High Efficiency Particulate Air filtration was developed by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission to filter particles down to 0.3 microns in size with a minimum of 99.97% removal efficiency. the Amaircare line of products outperforms electrostatic and other air filtration systems by employing 100 square feet of HEPA filter, blocking out dust particles, pollen, bacteria, mold spores, attached viruses, animal dander, radon daughters and more.
In the three stage process, the HEPA filter is further assisted by a pre-filter and a VOC canister of activated carbon and other custom blended materials which remove odors and toxic fumes form the air flow.
Contrary to general expectations, the efficiency of the Amaircare three stage system of particulate removal increased with use. Entrapped particles provide further mesh for new arrivals. HEPA filter life expectancy runs from 2 to 5 years varying on use. The activated carbon pre-filters are easily removed for cleaning or replacement as are the VOC canisters.
Air Exchange
The effectiveness of an air cleaning filtration system depends on air being passed quickly and frequently throughout he filter media. With an adjustable control option, the air filtration systems provide an air flow rate of 50 to 300 cubic feet per minute (tested), which means an exchange frequency of up to 12 times per hour in an average 10 foot by 20 foot room.
Laboratory Results
Following is a statistical graph relating experimental data showing the removal of particulate by a Amaircare filtration system in a monitored laboratory setting.
The tests are done by a new high technology unit in Germany and the results directly show the efficiency at which the Amaircare unit removes particles containing hazardous radon daughters which could potentially decompose in the human lung.
To maximize the efficiency of the HEPA filtration system, the air flow pattern is designed so that outgoing air is vented downward to stir up settled particles, forcing them in an upward circulating motion to be drawn back into the intake areas and through the filter media for removal. The unit sets up a circulating pattern of air continuously going through the filter scrubing the pollution out.
No Undesirable By-products
Electrostatic air cleaning may remove small airborne particulate, however, this process could result in the release of ozone as a potentially dangerous by-product. By utilizing the Amaircare air flow HEPA filter process, nothing is produced but clean air!
In addition to being highly effective at floor level, the Amaircare filtration units also perform well when wall or ceiling mounted.
The clean, simple hexagonal design of the Amaircare line of air filtration products was created with maximum visual appeal in mind. The design also provides ready mobility and they are extremely durable being made of all-metal construction with a baked enamel black or white finish.
Amaircare air filtration systems provide low-cost, high efficiency service in a wide range of applications:
Is the air in your home making you sick? asthma and allergies? headaches and dizziness? eye and throat irritations? fatigue? impaired vision? colds, flu, pneumonia? nose bleeds? respiratory problems? sinus congestion?
Air pollution can aggravate respiratory conditions, cause bodily irritations, sickness and even disease.
The air inside the typical home is up to 5 times more polluted than the air outside. That's because the home is an enclosed environment full of potential sources of air pollution.
There are three main types of air pollution:
Listed are sources of air pollutants in the home:

TEPCO has recently been finding in boreholes drilled just meters from the ocean stratospheric quantities of radioactivity, including cesium-134, cesium-137, strontium-90 and tritium. At first, TEPCO said this radiation - near the shoreline, but below the surface - originated 'from initial leaks that have remained since earlier in the crisis' and that stayed near the plant inside the bay. BUT THEY WERE WRONG! This was from leaks. This was radiation that was bleeding from the reactors or the coriums and contaminated the groundwater, which has been flowing to sea all along. The most recent alarming news is that TEPCO found 2.35 *tuh* trillion becquerels of radioactive cesium per cubic meter of groundwater in a trench beside reactor 2.
Since early July 2013, measurements peaking into the hundreds of BILLIONs of becquerels per cubic meter (denoted as Bq/m3) of beta radiation have been found in groundwater at the plant! Beta radiation includes such radionuclide groups as cesium, strontium, tritium, and dozens of other isotopes of chemical elements formed by nuclear fission (look at a trilinear chart; the betas are in broken-lined boxes). TEPCO is reluctant to test for strontium-90. STRONTIUM-90 IS WORSE THAN CESIUM-134 OR CESIUM 137 OR TRITIUM to human health. That's why I focus on this radiochemical across many of the hundreds of pages on NuclearCrimes.org. Read more about why Strontium-90 is a worse health threat than cesium.
When The Pacific Was Last Severely Contaminated
In 1954, the U.S. detonated its largest nuclear bomb ever. Code-named 'Bravo,' the hydrogen bomb explosion was 10,000 times the explosive yield of the A-bomb device it dropped 9 years earlier on Hiroshima.
The target: Bikini Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. This ultra-radiation release event showered a type ofradioactive snow on a populated island that the U.S. refused to evacuate for 50 hours - this was part of the notorous Project 4.1. The event also tainted the ocean so badly that hundreds of fishing boat hulls became contaminated, fishing sites became too 'hot' to fish, etc... and the effects lingered on for years. The currents pushed much of this radiation, and other radiation generated by USSR and U.S. nuclear dumping and bomb testing in the 1950s, to the Eastern Pacific. We're getting to this point quickly again with Fukushima's radioactive groundwater 'flood.'
TEPCO knows what they're doing. They are trying to keep people apathethic about this disaster and are being advised by the best spin-doctors in the world. For over 2 years now, TEPCO has done their informational 'drip drop' thing for all sorts of data, and now they're doing it with strontium-90 levels measured in groundwater. They're withholding most of this data and waiting, very carefully, to release this data until people no longer care or remember there was even data to be shared. Yet, we see from the few disclosures to date that strontium-90 levels keep increasing in groundwater with each sample; see chart in light blue color.
So, is strontium-90 going to be (or already is) a problem in the PACIFIC OCEAN from historic AND future groundwater releases at Fukushima? Strontium, like cesium, is WATER SOLUBLE, UNLIKE PLUTONIUM AND MANY OTHER RADIOCHEMICALS, so we can expect groundwater to be full of the stuff. And...THERE IS A LOT OF STRONTIUM LEFT TO BE LEACHED from the coriums, which are water-drenched, meaning they are slowly leaching radiation into the groundwater. The coriums at Fukushima contain MILLIONS OF TRILLIONS of becquerels of strontium-90 just waiting to be released...and since the corium's whereabouts are unknown, it's plausible that groundwater contamination could be getting worse, NOT BETTER!
So, let's say, soon, TEPCO finds 50 billion becquerels per cubic meter of strontium-90 in groundwater. That's 50,000,000,000 Bq/m3 of sr90. In a leak involving the volume of water in an Olympic sized swimming pool (which holds 2500 m3 of water), that's 125 TRILLION becqueruels of strontium-90! That's 125 trillion becquerels of strontium-90 in one big pool's worth of water !! Scientists are more or less in consensus - though this is a conservative estimate in my estimation - that Fukushima in 2011 released into the marine environment 1,000 TRILLION becquerels of strontium-90 (into the Pacific). So, over time, and we're talking just a few months from now, a volume of 10 (ten) Olympic pools of contaminated groundwater containing 50 billion bq/m3 of Sr90 would exceed the most conservative estimate of strontium-90 load put into the Pacific from the 2011 meltdowns (volatilized sr90), dumping and leaks combined! On July 12, 2013, a TEPCO worker said 450 tons of groundwater flow into the Pacific everyday; so it would take just 55 days for 10 volumes of Olympic swimming pools to meet this goal! 1 ton of water equals about 1 cubic meter of water). Perhaps this has already happened, or has happened a few times, since TEPCO has confirmed underground leaks to the sea have been happening since 2011.
We have a real crap-fest on our hands if this keeps going on and no one stops the groundwater flow. On August 5th of 2013, it was learned that tainted groundwater has breached an underground barrier at the Fukushima Daiichi plant's sea front, an event that Japan's nuclear regulatory body, the NRA, dubbed an emergency (data now shows that underground water has risen over this underground wall, a sort of chemical liquid glass barrier; the conclusion: tainted water is now leaking uncontrolled into the sea). Critics have long been saying that barriers being built by TEPCO around its reactors will simply back up the groundwater and cause new challenges, from imminent overflow (and faster flows of tainted water) to thwarting or overwhelming pumping AND STORAGE capability to literally crushing the reactor structures from the water pressure! If the entire REACTOR site becomes a type of 'soup' - if it is all turned into the saturated zone - the reactors could lose their stability and move, or sink. In an earthquake, the moist ground could experience liquefaction: it could behave as water even though it (the soil) is a solid. This would be very bad.
With this latest breach, TEPCO said that it was going to increase its testing for strontium-90 in seawater/groundwater despite an announcement by the utility in mid July 2013 that it was (a) reducing the frequency of analysis of Sr90 in sea samples and (b) was planning to cease reporting measurements (of Sr90) in becquerels, and instead in (erroneous) units of dose or other parameters meant to confuse and mislead, IMO. We shall see what happens. The fact remains that strontium-90 poses a greater danger, unit for unit, than tritium or cesium to human health and the environment, and strontium-90 will be entering the environment via groundwater flows in amounts many times that released by air during the meltdowns in 2011.
The worrisome part is we could soon be seeing radioactive measurements of strontium, cesium, tritium, and soon perhaps even plutonium, reaching record high levels as TEPCO throws up its hands and says it has no way or plan of dealing with UNCONTROLLED groundwater leaks for years, or decades!
THIS LOOKS LIKE IT WILL HAPPEN.
IT COULD BE WORSE FOR THE ECOSYSTEMS OF THE EARTH AND ITS INHABITANTS THAN THE MELTDOWNS IN 2011.
SEAFOOD LOVERS ACROSS THE WORLD: - The 'levels' of radiation in the seafood you are eating now and in the future will be ticking with radiation but will be considered 'safe' by government scientists. Why? Because their 'limits' are way too high. Yet it is fact that the only safe level of radiation to reduce genetic defects and cancer incidence worldwide is zero becquerels of anything. I COULD ADD TONS MORE....BUT YOU PROBABLY WON'T BELIEVE ME AND THIS WEBSITE IF IT CONTRADICTED THE RHETORIC OF THE AGENCIES YOU HAVE COME TO TRUST WHICH HAVE ACRONYMS THAT SHOULD BE SHORT FOR DEROGATORY AND INSULTING TERMS INSTEAD OF WORDS LIKE 'REGULATORY' OR 'HEALTH' OR 'PROTECTION.' Protect your own health and regulate your genetic stability for the sake of your children, grandchildren, etc...by NOT EATING SEAFOOD OR CONSUMING ANYTHING MADE IN THE SEA.
- TEPCO ADMITS RADIATION HAS BEEN LEAKING TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN ALL THIS TIME JULY 22, 2013 - ARTICLE -
TEPCO has seen the light and now has admitted what the experts were suspecting. Leaks are happening. The plant operator has also validated a theory put forward by a well-known, tireless blogger last week that tidal movements were responsible for some of this leakage. Iori of Fukushima-Diary wrote on his blog's July 19th post 'Possibility of seawater coming up to the plant side' the following:
'It's the possibility that seawater may come into the plant, and also contamination is flowing to the sea groundwater....Water flows from high to low. It's natural to think the contaminated groundwater is flowing to the deeper part of the sea, which is underground of the sea. Wrapping it all, it seems rational to think groundwater and seawater are moving back and forth as full tide repeats. By repeating the motion of the tide, contamination is possibly moving back and forth between land and sea too. As long as they keep injecting water to the reactors, Fukushima plant will keep being the worst contamination source of the Pacific.'
In late July 2013, The Asahi Shimbun stated that TEPCO had 'confirmed water level variations in monitoring wells as early as in January [2013]'; in other words, TEPCO knew since the beginning of 2013 that the 'wells where the radioactivity was detected were fluctuating in sync with tide levels.' TEPCO's delay in relaying this information to the public was blamed on poor 'in-house communications,' which has angered many groups in Japan.

++During a four-hour leak event (into the ocean) in March 2012, TEPCO had measured - 10 minutes BEFORE finding the leak! - 17 million Bq/m3 of beta radiation in water and five percent of that was strontium-90.
Thanks Fukushima Diary for their work! It's helping us.

If Iori is right, then deep contamination may be a huge problem, and TEPCO isn't looking for it; they're just looking at seawater in its port. Radiation could be emerging in large quantities daily from a spring or whatchamacallit hundreds of meters out at sea - or even miles or tens of miles away - where TEPCO is barely monitoring; according to Fukushima Diary, TEPCO has 'only three monitoring points outside of the port...' Two are 'close to the coastal line' and in a 1 kilometer radius area offshore they have just one monitoring point.' (source)
What this means...is there's an entire set of NEW plumes of highly contaminated seawater that are floating about and no one has any idea of when these plumes left the plant, their toxicity level or makeup. Some of this undiagnosed leaked radiation in the ocean is mixing with OLDER plumes, especially near the coast, to create significant spikes in contamination in ocean water and fish (seafood).
FLOOD, NOT LEAK - from 'The Food Lab' guy: 'They use the word leak, to play it down. Their estimate is 450 tons a day of ground water flowing into the Pacific Ocean. This is probably a very conservative estimate! It's a flood, not a leak!'
Carbon 14 and the 411 on Corium - July 29, 2013 - Bobby1, a blogger at WordPress, explores the hidden story of the latest at Fukushima. Excerpts:
'The neutrons from the chain reactions, along with neutron-emitting isotopes like plutonium and curium, interact with the nitrogen injections to cause carbon-14 to be released. There have been no measurements made of this isotope. Along with tritium (from neutrons and boric acid injections), this isotope is most deleterious to plant life. Linus Pauling, the two-time Nobel Prize-winning chemist, felt that carbon-14 was the most dangerous isotope of them all.'...
'Unit 3, which has been giving off a light show on the Daiichi wecams the past few weeks, has been giving off steam. Nitrogen has been injected into this reactor continuously, in order to prevent a hydrogen explosion. There is a shortfall in nitrogen recovered from the gas management system. This shows that the steam is coming from the reactor, or from the hole in the ground underneath the reactor, with MOX corium down there...The underground corium has encountered water. So there is a risk of a hydrovolcanic explosion with this plutonium-rich fuel.' {More:Cesium density in reactor3 "steam" higher than the gas inside of PCV}

IS THE PACIFIC OCEAN FOOD CHAIN DOOMED? - May 2013 - Incredibly worrisome levels of cesium, including short-lived radioactive cesium-134, have been found near Hawaii in the LOWEST part of the marine food chain: plankton. Levels up the food chain, i.e. fish, whales, seals, due to bioaccumulation, MUST be magnitudes higher in contamination now or soon - stop eating Pacific wild seafood now - Researchers find high cesium in some Pacific plankton
For a country that markets itself to the world with the slogan '100% Pure', New Zealand's environmental credentials are not as impeccable as many would think.
The majority of its rivers are too polluted to swim in. Its record on preservation of natural environments is among the worst in the world on a per capita basis.
And it is the only OECD country that does not produce a regular national report on its environment.
The discovery by dairy giant Fonterra of a bacteria that can cause potentially fatal food poisoning in ingredients sold to eight countries exposes New Zealand's vulnerability to food safety scares and the fragility of the clean, green image underpinning its farming- and tourism-based economy.
Agricultural exports, including dairy, meat, fruit and wine, command high premiums internationally thanks to New Zealand's reputation as a producer of safe, natural and high-quality food.
'It was only a matter of time before our dirty little secret came out,' said Jill Brinsdon, brand strategist at Radiation, a brand agency in Auckland.
'Fonterra is our largest exporter and they're completely intertwined with New Zealand's image and also they're the absolute biggest benefactor of the "100% Pure" brand.
'When you're coming out with something that presents itself as fact, or 100 per cent pure, then you have to be 100 per cent pure and we've proven that we're not.'
New Zealand's primary sector, which includes fishing and forestry, accounts for some 60 per cent of exports and 18 per cent of the country's $160billion GDP, among the highest proportions in the developed world. Tourism makes up another 10 percent or so of GDP.
The country has long marketed itself internationally with the '100% Pure' slogan in print and TV ads, drawing millions of visitors each year to experience its national parks, beaches and lakes.
With barely 4.5 million people spread over a mountainous area larger than the United Kingdom or California and more than a quarter of that set aside for reserves and national parks - the backdrop for the popular Lord of the Rings movie trilogy - New Zealand has no shortage of unspoilt natural attractions.
But the marketing overlooks a dark side to the country's environmental credentials.
More than 60 per cent of New Zealand rivers monitored by the Environment Ministry had 'poor' or 'very poor' water quality and were rated as unsafe for swimming due to pollution.
Dairy farming, which has a lot riding on New Zealand's strong environmental reputation, has been a significant cause of poor river quality due to fertiliser and effluent runoff.
Unlike many other countries, New Zealand cows are kept on grassy pastures year-round, a major selling point for its $9billion annual global dairy trade.
'Because we've had a lack of regulation on farm waste for 20 years it's been a free for all, so farmers have done what they can to produce more milk - which is to put more cows on pastures,' said Mike Joy, an ecology and environmental sustainability scientist at Massey University.
Prime Minister John Key, who has been previously criticised for saying the 100% Pure marketing should be taken with a pinch of salt, said New Zealand would always be reliant on dairying, with its natural competitive advantage and global demand rising.
'The right answer is not for New Zealand to sell less dairy. The right answer is for New Zealand to be absolutely sure that the safety standards are met,' he said on Tuesday.
While separate from its environmental credentials, New Zealand's food safety record is also not without stain.
Until the late 2000s, New Zealand had the highest rate in the developed world of food-borne campylobacteriosis, a serious and sometimes deadly disease caused by a bacteria often found in uncooked chicken.
By 2011, even after a major government initiative to control the epidemic, New Zealand still reported incidents of the disease at more than double the rate of nearby Australia and 12 times the rate of the United States, according to the University of Otago.
The botulism scare at Fonterra was the company's second contamination issue this year after it earlier found traces of dicyandiamde, a potentially toxic chemical, in some products.
Even so, New Zealand has one of the most stringent food safety regimes in the world and the recent dairy product scares only turned up with the sophisticated and sensitive testing available.
Fonterra expects the current contamination issue to be resolved within days.
A protracted, major animal health incident, rather than a localised contamination issue, could wreak havoc on the New Zealand economy.
A decade ago, at the height of a foot and mouth epidemic in Europe, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand modelled the impact of a limited outbreak of the livestock disease - estimating an immediate 20 per cent hit to the currency, as well as a 12 per cent fall in exports and an eight per cent hit to GDP in two years.
'We've got to wake up and look more closely at our green credentials, and work harder to create a pristine environment so consumers can get a product which matches the story,' said a consultant to New Zealand companies operating in Asia.
'We can't be complacent.'

Highly radioactive water [is] seeping into the ocean from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant [...]
This contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier [...] Shinji Kinjo, head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) task force, told Reuters. [...]
“Right now, we have an emergency,” he said.
[...] Tepco deeply apologized to residents in Fukushima prefecture, the surrounding region and the larger public for causing inconveniences, worries and trouble. [...]
[Kinjo] acknowledged that if the water reaches the surface, “it would flow extremely fast.”
Tepco is struggling to contain the highly radioactive water that is seeping into the ocean near Fukushima. The head of Japan's NRA, Shinji Kinjo exclaimed, "right now, we have an emergency," as he noted the contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier and is rising toward the surface - exceeding the limits of radioactive discharge. In a rather outspoken comment for the typically stoic Japanese, Kinjo said Tepco's "sense of crisis was weak," adding that "this is why you can't just leave it up to Tepco alone" to grapple with the ongoing disaster. As Reuters notes [5], Tepco has been accused of covering up shortcomings and has been lambasted for its ineptness in the response and while the company says it is taking actions to contain the leaks, Kinjo fears if the water reaches the surface "it would flow extremely fast," with some suggesting as little as three weeks until this critical point.
Japan Finally Admits The Truth: "Right Now, We Have An Emergency At Fukushima"
Exclusive: Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency' | Reuters
Japan's nuclear watchdog has said the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is facing a new "emergency" caused by a build-up of radioactive groundwater.
A barrier built to contain the water has already been breached, the Nuclear Regulatory Authority warned.
This means the amount of contaminated water seeping into the Pacific Ocean could accelerate rapidly, it said.
There has been spate of water leaks and power failures at the plant, devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Its operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), has been criticised heavily for its lack of transparency over the leaks.
