Ahed Tamimi Seeks Law Degree and Political Future

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Aged-17, Ahed already is an internationally recognized iconic freedom fighter for Palestinian liberation - an inspiration to millions worldwide.

Resisting tyranny is a universal right. When ruling authorities abuse their people, challenging them through disruptive activism for fundamental rights denied is warranted and essential.

Electoral participation doesn’t work. Laws empower privileged interests against the general welfare. Media scoundrels largely control the message, supporting what demands denunciation.

Democracy in most countries is pure fantasy, not real, the way things are in America, other Western societies and Israel - tyrannical rule pretending otherwise, corrupted power too debauched to fix.

Governance in these countries is the handmaiden of powerful anti-populist interests. The only solution is disruptive collective resistance - nonviolent revolution for change. Nothing else can work.

Interviewed by AP News the day after her release from political imprisonment, Ahed Tamimi said she hopes to pursue a law degree to address Israeli human rights abuses against the Palestinian people.

“I would like to be lawyer to convey the voice of my country and the message of my people,” she said, adding: “I expect to have a political future.”

Her activism for justice will continue, undeterred by Israeli threats and repression.

“Soldiers used to deliberately come through the area of my house, and shoot from the entrance of the house” unprovoked, she explained.

They fired tear gas canisters inside when her parents were home alone threatening no one.

“I was full of strong feelings, upset... burning from inside,” she said.

Earlier, her father Bassem expressed pride in his daughter, calling her “a freedom fighter who in the coming years will lead the resistance to (repressive) Israeli rule.”

Her family and Nabi Saleh residents have been viciously persecuted by Israel. It was just a matter of time before her arrest and imprisonment - for resisting Netanyahu regime tyranny.

Months before her arrest and imprisonment on a trip to South Africa, she addressed the audience after viewing a documentary about Israel’s ruthless treatment of Nabi Saleh residents, saying:

“We may be victims of the Israeli regime, but we are just as proud of our choice to fight for our cause, despite the known cost.”

“We knew where this path would lead us, but our identity, as a people and as individuals, is planted in the struggle, and draws its inspiration from there.”

“Beyond the suffering and daily oppression of the prisoners, the wounded and the killed, we also know the tremendous power that comes from belonging to a resistance movement; the dedication, the love, the small sublime moments that come from the choice to shatter the invisible walls of passivity.”

“I don’t want to be perceived as a victim, and I won’t give their actions the power to define who I am and what I’ll be.”

“I choose to decide for myself how you will see me. We don’t want you to support us because of some photogenic tears, but because we chose the struggle and our struggle is just. This is the only way that we’ll be able to stop crying one day.”

These, other comments, and actions show her exceptional maturity, dedication, and courage at a very young age.

Addressing his daughter, Bassem Tamimi said: “Ahed, no parent in the world yearns to see his daughter spending her days in a detention cell.”

“However, Ahed, no one could be prouder than I am of you. You and your generation are courageous enough, at last, to win.”

“Your actions and courage fill me with awe and bring tears to my eyes.”

“But in accordance with your request, these are not tears of sadness or regret, but rather tears of struggle.”
