WaPo Promotes Endless Illegal US Occupation of Syria
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)
Syria is a sovereign independent state threatening no others.
Yet in March 2011, the Obama administration launched naked aggression on the country, using ISIS and other terrorists as imperial foot soldiers - US-led terror-bombing begun in September 2014.
America’s presence in Syria is flagrantly illegal, notably its occupation of northern and southern areas - on the phony pretext of combating ISIS Washington created and supports.
On Sunday, neocon/CIA-connected Washington Post editors called for endless US occupation, leaving Syria a “bad idea,” they claimed - ignoring Washington’s war of aggression, its rape and destruction of the country, its responsibility for hundreds of thousands of deaths and the gravest refugee crisis since WW II.
Trump’s shoot-from-the-hip/off-the-cuff comment about “coming out of Syria very soon” was polar opposite Defense Secretary James Mattis saying US forces are staying - falsely claiming it’s “to make sure we set the conditions for a diplomatic solution” Washington rejects.
Endless war continues for regime change, why conflict resolution remains unattainable.
WaPo: “(T)he president’s words will surely encourage Russian and Iranian hopes of driving the United States out of the country, so they can entrench their military bases and political influence.”
“That would pose a major threat to Israel and severely damage US standing throughout the Middle East.”
Fact: Washington came to Syria to stay, endless US occupation continuing in Afghanistan and Iraq as well, maybe Yemen, and escalated involvement in Libya.
Fact: Russia, Iran and Hezbollah support Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity - Moscow in the lead, going all-out for conflict resolution, unattainable because Washington wants war.
Russia and Iran are allied in trying to restore peace and stability to the country, not entrenching their military positions - a US aim, not theirs.
Hezbollah is mainly concerned about preventing conflict spilling cross-border into Lebanon.
WaPo supports all US wars of aggression. So do other media scoundrels - backing what demands condemnation.
