WaPo Calls for Pompeo’s Confirmation as Secretary of State
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
The neocon/CIA-connected Washington Post urged one of its own be confirmed as Trump’s new secretary of state.
Pompeo has outsized ambitions. Moving from Congress to Langley advanced his career, heading Foggy Bottom another step toward the nation’s top job he no doubt covets.
Trump administration war cabinet officials comprise a rogue’s gallery of neocon Russophobes, Islamophobes, war-mongering extremists, Pompeo one of the worst.
As CIA director, he became the latest in a long line of agency heads disdainful of democratic values and rule of law principles.
Once confirmed, he’ll operate the same way as secretary of state. His hawkishness is over-the-top, supporting Washington’s permanent war agenda – his hardline extremism incompatible with diplomacy.
He’s militantly anti-Russia, anti-Iran, anti-North Korea, anti-Syria, anti-other sovereign independent governments, anti-world peace and stability.
Earlier he lied calling Iran “a very dangerous threat to the United States…the world’s largest state sponsor of terror…”
He lied saying Russia is America’s strategic enemy. He lied calling Assad an Iranian puppet.
He lied saying Hezbollah is an Iranian proxy force, pursing an expansionist agenda with Tehran.
He lied claiming Russia isn’t combating ISIS in Syria. He lied saying Washington is “diligently working to defeat ISIS” it supports.
He lied calling North Korea an existential threat, saying it’s “a handful of months” away from being able to attack America with nuclear weapons.
He threatened Russia, saying “America has an obligation to push back against” Putin.
He and Bolton are spearcarriers for endless wars of aggression, wanting one sovereign independent state after another raped and destroyed.
WaPo urged his confirmation, supporting what demands condemnation, saying:
During his Thursday Senate confirmation hearing, he “did his best…to be reassuring,” claiming he “favor(s) diplomatic solutions with Iran and North Korea.”
He falsely accused Russia of “bad behavior,” vowing to “reset…deterrence.”
To its disgrace, WaPo called “rejecting or delaying his confirmation” a mistake, ludicrously claiming:
“(A)s Trump juggles multiple crises without adequate counsel, (his absence at State) would make an already parlous situation worse. Mr. Pompeo should be deployed to Foggy Bottom in the hope that he will fulfill his promise to revive and reassert US diplomacy.”
Despite considerable undemocratic Dem opposition, he’ll likely be confirmed – sinking Foggy Bottom to a lower depth with him in charge.
A Final Comment: Pompeo on Russia, Syria, Iran and North Korea:
In his prepared Senate confirmation hearing remarks, Pompeo consistently turned truth on its head, notably on Russia and Syria, saying:
“Russia continues to act aggressively, enabled by years of soft policy toward that aggression. That’s now over.”
“The actions of this administration make clear that President Trump’s national security strategy, rightfully, has identified Russia as a danger to our country.”
He blasted the Syrian Arab Republic, falsely saying it “poses a mounting threat to human rights, national security, and regional stability – and it deserves an increasingly severe response.”
He called for fixing or nixing the Iran nuclear deal, intending to pressure Britain, France and Germany to back Washington’s demands.
On the DPRK, he said “I have read the CIA histories of previous negotiations with the North Koreans, and am confident that we will not repeat the mistakes of the past.”
“President Trump isn’t one to play games at the negotiating table – and I won’t be either.”
Bolton as new national security advisor and Pompeo at State (as at Langley) represent a menace to humanity in their positions.
Along with other neocons infesting the administration and Congress, they threaten world peace and stability.
