US Threatens to Attack Syrian Forces – Again
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
On Friday, the Trump regime’s State Department warned Syria against launching an offensive to liberate US-supported terrorists-controlled areas in the country bordering Jordan, saying:
Washington will take “firm and appropriate measures in response” to efforts by Syrian forces to liberate sovereign territory the Trump regime wants to maintain control over.
It’s part of its diabolical scheme for regime change, partitioning Syria, stealing its resources, exploiting its people, and isolating Iran, ahead of a similar scheme to replace its government with pro-Western puppet rule – by economic strangulation followed by color revolution or naked aggression.
The State Department arrogantly demands Russia “compel (Assad) to cease further military offensives” that are vital to liberate the country from the scourge of US-supported terrorists and the illegal presence of Pentagon troops in southern and northern areas.
According to AMN News, government forces are mobilized in strength in “Daraa and Al-Quneitra governorates” near the Jordanian border.
An offensive to liberate the area is coming, aided by Russian airpower, if US-supported terrorists don’t agree to leave territory they illegally occupy.
Daraa is where the Obama regime’s aggression on Syria began in March 2011 – armed elements (US-supported terrorists) firing on security forces and civilians.
At the time, claims about government forces attacking peaceful demonstrators were bald-faced lies.
Trump escalated Obama’s aggression to topple Assad – war in its 8th year with no prospect for resolution as long as Washington wants it continued endlessly.
Despite liberation of the Damascus countryside from its terrorist infestation, much of southern Syria remains occupied by ISIS, likeminded groups and US forces.
Last week, Pentagon-led “coalition” warplanes reportedly struck eastern Syrian military sites. Reuters and AFP said the attack was near an energy installation close to the Iraqi border.
A Syrian military source said “(s)ome of our military positions between Abu Kamal and Khmeimim were hit this morning in an aggression by American coalition warplanes.”
In recent weeks, US airstrikes on Syrian targets increased sharply – on the phony pretext of combating ISIS Washington created and supports.
Separately on Saturday, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Shamkhani said (a)s long as the threat of terrorism exists in Syria and the country’s legitimate government” wants Iranian military advisors to remain, “we will stay in Syria.”
Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said his government wants Iranian military advisors to remain in the country, pullout not up for discussion.
Shamkhani stressed “Iran’s missile program is completely indigenous and defensive. We will not seek permission from anyone to develop our defense power and will not hold negotiations on it,” adding:
"There is no logical reason to negotiate with a country that does not abide by its commitments. By leaving the JCPOA, the US practically tore up the international agreement.”
Washington wants war, not peace, in the Middle East, Central Asia, North Africa and elsewhere – its main strategy for global dominance, risking possible catastrophic nuclear war if the madness isn’t challenged and stopped.
