Russian Foreign Ministry on Syria and Crimea

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.orgHome – Stephen Lendman)

At her weekly press briefings, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (MZ below) focuses heavily on Syria because of ongoing operations to liberate the country from US-supported terrorists, and illegal presence of US and Turkish forces where they don’t belong.

East Ghouta is in the eye of the Syria storm. “Russia does not view…counterterrorist operation(s) contradicting…Security Council 2401,” MZ explained, adding:

“At the same time, in coordination with the Syrian authorities, Russian military forces are taking all possible measures to avoid casualties among civilians, which are being used by the terrorists as human shields, as well as to provide them with food and necessary medications through UN humanitarian convoys and evacuate the sick and wounded and those in need of urgent medical assistance.”

All East Ghouta militants are US-supported terrorists. Western and other media, including RT, falsely call them “rebels.”

They’re cutthroat killers, largely recruited from scores of countries, provided heavy weapons by Washington, NATO, Israel and other regional rogue states.

They’re responsible for numerous CW attacks, falsely blamed on Syrian forces.

MZ: “(R)esponsibility for fighting in Eastern Ghouta, the deaths and suffering of people, lies with the terrorists…”

“(C)riticism from a number of Western capitals of the allegedly indiscriminate attacks by the Syrian army on Eastern Ghouta, as well as unsubstantiated and logically absurd accusations of Damascus using poisonous substances do not serve the interests of an early termination to the bloodshed and suffering of the civilian population that remain in the enclave, but irresponsibly encourage those who found a place in one trench with terrorists and give them the misleading hope that the determination of the government of Syria to put an end to the terrorist threat…can be broken.”

“Resolution 2401…does not abolish the uncompromising struggle against terrorism and any of its manifestations.”

Well said, what only responsible alternative media report!

Separately, MZ explained that Russian, Iranian and Turkish foreign ministers will meet in Astana on March 16, continuing to discuss conflict resolution efforts.

Ankara pretends to support it while waging air and ground aggression in the northern Afrin region.

Russia and Iran alone are allied with Syria in the struggle to eliminate US-supported terrorists. Turkey is part of the problem, not the solution.

Separately, March 18 marks the fourth anniversary of Crimea’s reunification with Russia – overwhelmingly approved by popular referendum, rejecting illegitimate Kiev putschist rule, their self-determination right affirmed under international law.

MZ: “(W)e would like to emphasize the absolute delusiveness of persistent Western hopes to reverse this, in particular, by exerting pressure on Russia,” adding:

“Those who really know life in Crimea today – I am referring to foreign delegations and representatives – note the interethnic stability and obvious socio-economic success, although there is still a lot to be done.”

Crimea is a Southern Federal District Russian Republic, fully integrated into the Russian Federation in July 2015, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev explained.

The Crimean Bridge linking Crimea to the mainland will open to traffic later this year, MZ explained.
