More on US-Led Overnight Aggression on Syria

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.orgHome – Stephen Lendman)

The attack was naked aggression against sovereign Syria based on a Big Lie – exposed to the light of day, yet ignored by Western aggressors and supportive media scoundrels.

According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, Syrian air defenses destroyed 71 incoming cruise and air-to-ground missiles launched by US, UK and French forces.

Others struck targets explained in a same-day article. No government military airbases were damaged.

A Russian military General Staff statement said “(a) few years ago, we refused to supply S-300 air defense systems to Syria due to the request of some of our Western partners (sic).”

“Taking into account what happened, we consider it possible to return to this issue. And not only with regard to Syria, but with regard to other states.”

Why didn’t Russia take it “into account” after Washington’s April 2017 naked aggression on Syria’s Shayrat airbase or much earlier – because of US support for ISIS and other terrorists, aiding them by terror-bombing, massacring countless thousands of Syrian civilians, destroying vital infrastructure?

The overnight attack was conducted by US warships near Syria’s coast, along with UK, French and US B-1B warplanes.

Russia’s Defense Ministry correctly said the overnight aggression was “not a response to an alleged chemical attack, but a reaction to the success of the Syrian armed forces in the liberation of its territory from international terrorism.”

“The strike was carried out exactly on the day when the OPCW special mission was set to start its work in Damascus to probe the incident in the city of Douma, where chemical weapons had allegedly been used.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova blasted US-led aggression, saying it was launched on a sovereign state “that has been fighting for survival for years amid terrorist aggression.”

Syria’s Army High Command issued a statement, saying the overnight attack and others won’t deter its armed forces from continuing to battle and eliminate terrorists throughout the country.

Erdogan-led Turkey is Syria’s sworn enemy. Following the attack, its Foreign Ministry issued a despicable statement, saying:

“We welcome this operation which has eased humanity’s conscience in the face of the attack in Douma” – blaming Damascus for what didn’t happen, proving its regime can never be trusted, nor can America, Israel, Britain, France and their rogue allies.

Coordinated with the overnight aggression, US-supported ISIS launched an attack in the southern Damascus countryside. Syrian forces in the area are able to repel it.

The attack showed ISIS is down but not defeated, still a force to be reckoned with.

Assad was unharmed by the overnight aggression. Russia called for an emergency Security Council meeting to address it – a worthless exercise in rhetorical give and take by both sides of the conflict, accomplishing nothing.

Overnight US-led aggression on Syria was a sign of weakness, not strength.

Russia defeated US imperial aims in the country short of all-out war – still possible, risking a global conflict, the threat very much remaining.
