US Incremental Regime Change Plan in Syria
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
US war on Syria is all about regime change, wanting pro-Western puppet governance replacing its sovereign independence, its territorial integrity carved up, its resources looted, its people exploited.
It’s also about eliminating an Israeli adversary, isolating Iran ahead of initiating a similar scheme against its government.
That’s how imperialism works, a diabolical plan to achieve dominance, recklessly dangerous the way Washington operates, risking global war.
Trump escalated what Obama began in Syria, continuing endless war, occupying large northern and southern parts of the country, supporting ISIS and other terrorists, using them as imperial foot soldiers, backing the scourge he pretends to oppose.
US and Russian objectives in Syria are world’s apart – Washington a ruthless aggressor, Moscow a peace and stability champion.
Sergey Lavrov accused the Trump administration of attempting to carve up Syria illegally – “setting up alternative government bodies in large parts of (of the country), which is contrary to the obligations in relation to Syria’s territorial integrity they have reaffirmed commitment to, particularly at the Security Council’s meetings.”
What’s ongoing in Syria and elsewhere reflect America’s longstanding imperial agenda, Lavrov concerned about what’s happening.
It’s nothing new. It’s consistent US geopolicy, waging forever wars, prioritizing them over a new era of peace – an anathema notion to America’s military/industrial complex, including Wall Street, profiting hugely from US aggression.
Serving from 1898 to 1931, awarded two congressional medals of honor, Marine Corps General Smedley Butler famously explained what every American should know, including US armed forces members, saying:
“I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers.”
“In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914.”
“I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in.”
“I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street.”
“I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912.”
“I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916.”
“I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927, I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested.”
“Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”
Everyone should read his anti-war classic titled “War is a Racket.” It’s more relevant now than when published pre-WW II in 1935 because the stakes are far higher.
America’s permanent war agenda risks ending life on earth. Lavrov is concerned about its objectives in Syria. It’s part of its global aim for unchallenged dominance.
“Rex Tillerson told me many times that the only reason for (America’s) presence (in Syria) is defeating” ISIS, Lavrov explained, adding:
“Now they have some much more long-standing plans. We will have to take this into account and look for solutions that won’t allow the destruction of Syrian sovereignty.”
America’s imperial agenda risks belligerent confrontation with Russia, China, Iran and North Korea – a potential doomsday scenario.
