All Hell Breaking Out in Syria Imminent?

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.orgHome – Stephen Lendman)

According to Defense Secretary Mattis, US forces are ready to attack Syria, saying:

“We stand ready to provide military options if they are appropriate as the President determines” – at the same time adding “(w)e are still assessing the intelligence ourselves and our allies. We’re still working on this.”

According to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, Trump “holds Russia and Syria responsible for this (nonexistent) chemical weapons attack,” adding Washington doesn’t rule out striking Russian forces in the country.

CENTCOM commander General Joseph Votel cancelled a scheduled April 12 public appearance, suggesting US-led hostilities on Syria may be imminent.

Russian military forces are on high alert, including its Black Sea fleet and eastern Mediterranean warships.

According to senior Iranian official Ali Akbar Velayati, “(w)e will stand by Syria’s government against any foreign aggression…Iran backs Syria in its fight against America and the Zionist regime.”

Israeli forces are on high alert, perhaps poised to ally with a US-led attack on Syrian targets. If Iran and/or Russia respond militarily to what’s coming, all hell breaking loose could follow.

A US-led attack is virtually certain, France, Britain and perhaps other NATO countries involved, how extensive unknown until fireworks begin.

Syria reportedly moved its warplanes to Russia’s Khmeimim airbase in the country, wanting them kept them out of harm’s way if US-led forces attack.

Assad’s political and media advisor Bouthaina Shaaban said “(w)e do not want wars, but we do not fear them and are ready, especially since the balance of power and rules of engagement have changed significantly in favor of Syria.”

“We are much stronger than we were in the past,” adding liberating East Ghouta entirely was a major triumph ahead of freeing Syria entirely from US-supported terrorists.

For now, it’s breath holding time ahead of what’s coming. Russia wants conflict resolution. Washington is hell bent on regime change.

The fullness of time will provide clarity to what’s only speculation so far. Ominous signs aren’t encouraging.
