A Duplicitous Note from the NYT’s New Publisher
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
Arthur Gregg (AG) Sulzberger (AGS below) succeeds his father Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr. as NYT publisher – control kept all in the family, AOS serving as chairman of the New York Times Company.
The self-styled newspaper of record has been around since 1851 – suppressing the most vital news, information and analysis fit to print, substituting disinformation, Big Lies and fake news.
Project Veritas calls the Times an American (Soviet era) Pravda, betraying its readers instead of informing them, caught red-handed in bald-faced lying countless times.
Its longstanding record includes supporting powerful interests, backing corporate predators, cheerleading imperial wars, ignoring America’s sham democracy, pretending its farcical elections are legitimate, and opposing the sovereign rights of independent countries Washington wants toppled and replaced by pro-Western puppet rule.
AGS laughably said Times tradition has been to be “fiercely independent, dedicated to journalism of the highest integrity and devoted to the public welfare.”
Its agenda is polar opposite, failing to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable” – how newspapers and other media are supposed to operate, according to Chicago-based writer Finley Peter Dunne (1867 – 1936).
AGS: “(T)he need for independent, courageous, trustworthy journalism is as great as it’s ever been.”
The need is greater than ever during the most perilous time in world history, given Washington’s reckless imperial agenda, its war on freedom, the threat of nuclear war against one or more countries.
The Times and other media scoundrels fail the test – independent views and truth-telling on vital issues banished from their reports, wrong supported over right, failing to support vital issues, including:
- putting money power back in public hands where it belongs;
- supporting social justice;
- curbing corporate power;
- obeying, not violating, international, constitutional and US statute laws;
- getting money entirely out of politics;
- aiding impoverished millions;
- running free, fair and open elections;
- ending duopoly governance with two right wings, taking turns ruling;
- letting independent candidates compete freely;
- stressing environment conservation over financial gain;
- strengthening the disappearing middle class;
- preserving public education;
- supporting organized labor;
- protecting human and civil rights;
- ending monopolies and oligopolies;
- prosecuting corporate and public crooks;
- reinstituting progressive taxes;
- ending corporate personhood; and
- transforming America from a pariah state to a model society.
“Misinformation is rising and trust in the media is declining,” said AGS – deplorable Times reporting a key reason why.
“The Times will hold itself to the highest standards of independence, rigor and fairness,” he said – only if a publication by the same name operates on another planet, never the New York-based one.
“(W)e believe truth should be pursued wherever it leads,” AGS roared – suppressing it from Times pages on issues mattering most, notably geopolitical ones.
The self-styled newspaper of record is a national disgrace – new publisher AGS charged with continuing its ignoble tradition.
