Russia Arming the Taliban?

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

In a BBC interview, US Afghan commander General John Nicholson criticized (nonexistent) “destabilizing activity” by Russia, accusing the Kremlin of providing the Taliban with weapons and financial support.

“We’ve had weapons brought to this headquarters and given to us by Afghan leaders (saying) this was given by the Russians to the Taliban. We know that the Russians are involved,” he claimed, adding:

Moscow staged counterterrorism exercises along the Afghan/Tajikistan border, leaving “large amounts of equipment” and weapons behind, ending up in the hands of Taliban fighters.

Nicolson lied, his accusation coming at the same time Moscow is falsely accused of the UK Skripal incident, an unlikely coincidence.

Similar false US claims surfaced last March, April, July and September. Russia’s Foreign Ministry called them “utterly false, a complete fabrication…not even worth a reaction.”

Sergey Lavrov slammed them, calling them “unprofessional and groundless.” US intelligence operatives “know perfectly well that those statements are untrue. Not a single fact” supports them, adding:

The accusations aren’t new. They serfaced numerous times before throughout the war, now in its 18th year.

A separate Russian Foreign Ministry statement said “US generals continue the vicious practice of keeping afloat the issue of mythical Russian assistance to the militants from the Taliban movement…not backed with any proof at all.”

It’s a smokescreen, “diverting attention” from America’s long ago lost war - still waged to maintain US imperial control over the country.

Last summer, Russophobic CNN aired unverified videos, pretending to show Taliban fighters armed with Russian weapons.

They only proved deep-seated CNN hostility toward Russia, nothing else. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the airing a deliberate “disinformation campaign,” adding:

“CNN is a reliable propaganda tool” serving US imperial interests, its reports pure rubbish.

It’s the least trusted name in television news - others vying for the dishonor!
