Venezuela in the US Crosshairs

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Former CIA director James Woolsey earlier said the US interferes in the internal affairs of other nations “for a very good cause.”

He omitted explaining that it’s all about serving US imperial interests at the expense of targeted nations and their people, - political, economic, financial, sanctions and hot wars the favored strategies.

The US is waging undeclared war on Venezuela. Tactics so far include:

harsh (illegal) sanctions intended to make the economy scream and its people suffer;

declaring a national emergency when none exists, falsely claiming (made-in-the-USA) events in Venezuela threaten US national security;

falsely calling Maduro’s May 2018 legitimate democratic reelection fraudulent, demanding a new one, its results to be recognized only if a candidate acceptable to Washington wins;

designating usurper in waiting Juan Guaido (puppet) interim president - elected by no one;

appointing convicted felon Elliott Abrams point man for toppling Maduro - violently if other tactics fail;

likely using the ruse of humanitarian aid to smuggle weapons to opposition elements - a plot similar to arming anti-Sandinista contra terrorists in Nicaragua in the 1980s, the scheme Elliott Abrams and his co-conspirators orchestrated.

Legislative war on Venezuela is being waged. The House passed by voice vote Venezuelan Human Rights and Democracy Protection Act (2014) directed the president to impose asset blocking sanctions on Venezuelan officials and other toughness on the phony pretext of their actions posing a threat to US national security.

The legislation related to violent street protests at the time - made in the USA like what’s ongoing now - the Obama regime then like the Trump regime now, wanting US controlled fascist tyranny replacing Venezuelan social democracy.

In March 2015, Obama’s Executive Order 13692 falsely declared Venezuela an “unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” inventing) national emergency in order to confront” a nonexistent threat.

Trump way outdid him, signing five anti-Venezuela executive orders - in August 2017, March, May and November 2018, and January 2019 - imposing new illegal harsh sanctions, asset freezes, and other toughness - to address made-in-the-USA crisis conditions in the country, exacerbated by low oil prices.

Maduro hasn’t asked Moscow for military assistance so far, according to Russian Foreign Ministry Latin America department head Alexander Shchetinin - what’s badly needed jointly with China. I urged both countries to send peacekeepers to protect against possible US military intervention, provided Maduro authorizes it.

Shchetinin warned the Trump regime against “unthinkable meddling into foreign affairs of a sovereign nation” - precisely what’s ongoing, his remark and others from Russian officials falling on deaf ears in Washington.

Maduro asked OPEC for support against illegally imposed US sanctions on state-owned oil giant PDVSA, saying:

“Our country hopes to receive the solidarity and full support of the member countries of OPEC and its ministerial conference in the fight we are currently having against the illegal and arbitrary intrusion of the United States in the internal affairs of Venezuela.”

Fascist regimes in Colombia and Brazil are complicit with Washington’s humanitarian intervention scheme, a convenient pretext for stoking internal violence and chaos, time and again for wars of aggression.

Maduro denounced the scheme, calling it a disruptive political stunt, a pretext for invasion.

In response to the threat, Venezuela’s military is conducting the nation’s largest ever military exercises, continuing through February 15, aimed at protecting the country’s territorial integrity from hostile yankee invaders and other disruptive actions.

US humanitarian intervention and responsibility to protect are all about undermining national sovereignty of nations targeted for regime change.

The Wall Street Journal reported that events in Venezuela are part of a larger Trump regime strategy to transform the hemisphere - wanting all its nations colonized, subservient to US interests, including Cuba and Nicaragua, along with shutting out Sino/Russian regional influence.

Undemocratic Dem Woodrow Wilson, responsible for US involvement in WW I, the Fed’s creation, and federal income tax to service the nation’s debt owed to bankers once said:

“I am going to teach the South American republics to elect good men” - puppets Washington controls, he meant.

The US has operated this way since the mid-19th century - long ago regionally, today considering planet earth its backyard.
