US Sanctions Are Acts of Political and Economic War

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

No nation may legally impose sanctions on other countries, entities, groups or individuals.

Washington does it repeatedly with bipartisan Republican and undemocratic Dem support. Imposition breaches international and constitutional law.

The US is a pariah state sponsor of terrorism, threatening world peace and stability.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev earlier accused Washington of waging a full-fledged trade war on the Russian Federation.

At the time, he said newly imposed sanctions dashed  “hopes for improving our relations with the new (Trump) administration.”

He called illegally imposed sanctions on Russia “a declaration of full-fledged economic war.”

On Thursday, he said “(i)f measures like a ban on banking activities or the use of this or that currency follows, this can be clearly be described as a declaration of an economic war.”

“And this war will have to be responded to - by economic, political and, if necessary, other means. And our American partners should realize this.”

Fact: Washington considers Russia its main global enemy, not its “partner,” as Medvedev, Putin, Lavrov and other Russian officials falsely state - knowing better but saying what’s untrue anyway.

Fact: Following the US-orchestrated coup in Ukraine, replacing democratic governance with illegitimate Nazi-infested fascist rule, Washington imposed multiple rounds of illegal sanctions on Russian public and private figures, along with public and private entities.

Bald-faced lies unjustifiably justified them, falsely accusing Russia of aggression in Ukraine, annexing Crimea, downing MH-17, meddling in America’s electoral process and others elsewhere, cyberwar, sabotage, hybrid warfare, and the Skripal incident - Big Lies repeated enough to get most people to believe them.

Sanctions for all the above reasons and others are acts of political and economic war. If overly harsh, harm done can be as devastating as conflict between standing armies.

Washington uses sanctions like weapons of war without declaring it, in lieu of diplomacy - collective punishment against citizens of targeted countries, especially those least advantaged.

No nation may interfere in the affairs of other countries except in self-defense if attacked - or if an attack is clearly imminent.

Any foreign meddling flagrantly breaches international law, including the UN Charter and 1933 Montevideo Convention of Rights and Duties, Article 8 stating:

“No state has the right to intervene in the internal or external affairs of another.”

Article 10 requires differences between states to be “settled by recognized pacific methods.”

Article 11 calls sovereign state territory “inviolable…”

US cold and hot wars rage in multiple theaters. On Friday, Putin met with members of Russia’s Security Council, possible new sanctions on the US discussed.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “there was a discussion of new unfriendly steps on the part of Washington, which may take the form of trade restrictions,” calling them “illegitima(t) from the standpoint of international law.”

Irreconcilable differences separate the agendas of both countries, Trump powerless to change things.
