Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Blasts Trump Regime’s Support for Terrorists in Syria

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Gabbard’s geopolitical record is mixed. She’s shamefully Russophobic, repeating the Big Lie about (nonexistent) “Russian aggression” in Ukraine, supports Kiev’s US-installed coup d’etat regime, along with illegal unilateral US sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea.

Her well-intentioned 2016 Stop Arming Terrorists Act (SATA) got scant support. Introducing it, she said “(w)hen it comes to the war against terrorists, I’m a hawk. When it comes to counterproductive wars of regime change, I’m a dove.”

On the right side of US-led aggression in Syria, she opposes condemning Bashar al-Assad, saying targeting him is “a thinly veiled attempt to use the rationale of ‘humanitarianism’ as a justification to escalate our illegal, counterproductive war” – aiming to illegally topple him and his government.

In January 2017, she spent a week in Damascus, Aleppo and Beirut, witnessing firsthand the horrific impact of war on ordinary Syrians.

There are no so-called moderate “rebels” involved in the conflict, she said, adding: “That is a fact.” They’re all terrorists, “trying to overthrow Assad.”

After meeting with him in Damascus, she expressed “even greater resolve to end our illegal war to overthrow the Syrian government.”

On September 13, she called on  Congress to condemn the Trump regime’s protection of al-Qaeda in Idlib, Syria, saying the following:

“Two days ago, President Trump and Vice President Pence delivered (hollow) speeches about the attacks on 9/11, talking about” victims of terrorism - jihadists they support while falsely claiming otherwise.

They’re “protect(ing)” tens of thousands of cutthroat killer “al-Qaeda and other jihadist forces in Syria, and threatening Russia, Syria, and Iran, with military force if they dare attack these terrorists.”

“This is a betrayal of the American people (including) my brothers and sisters in uniform who have been killed or wounded in action and their families.”

“For the president, who is commander in chief, to act as the protective big brother of al-Qaeda and other jihadists must be condemned by every member of Congress.”

In June, 2018, Reps. Gabbard and Walter Jones introduced H. Res. 922: No More Presidential Wars Resolution, declaring wars waged without congressional approval impeachable “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Earlier this year, Gabbard confronted Trump regime war secretary Mattis, saying Syria poses no threat to America. US aggression rages in the country without congressional authorization.

Gabbard rightfully opposes endless US-led aggression in Syria. She’s wrong about Congress.

Security Council members alone may authorize war by one or more nations against others - permitted only in self-defense if attacked, never preemptively or aggressively, the way Washington wages all its wars - from Korea in June 1950 to the present, all these conflicts flagrantly illegal.

Separately on Friday, Sergey Lavrov said they’ll be no reconciliation offered (US-supported) terrorists in Idlib province, explaining:

We’re “vigorously working on solving the situation in Idlib in full accordance with arrangements…made during the process of creating the de-escalation zone...there.”

“The arrangements entail the announcement of the ceasefire with one crucial exception. Terrorists are not included. No reconciliation, no ceasefire regime includes” them.

“We always stick to International humanitarian law when we conduct operations involving military action.”

“(T)he Russian Federation has a military presence in Syria at the request of its official government, the government of the UN member state, the government whose sovereignty (and) Syrian territorial integrity were confirmed by UN SC resolutions many times.”

According to AMN News, citing a military source, Damascus has no planned offensive to liberate Idlib city. Area operations “will be limited to…northern Latakia, northern Hama, southeast (and southwest) Idlib,” adding:

Operations intend “seal(ing) the entire Idlib governorate border with the Hama and Latakia governorates.”

“For Russia, retaking Jisr Al-Shughour is their primary objective, as it is the main launching point for the jihadist missiles and drones on the Khmeymim airbase in southwest Latakia.”
