North Korea/US Summit Agreement Unravelling

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Washington can never be trusted - consistently breaching what it agrees to with rare exceptions.

Abhorring cooperative relations, GOP and undemocratic Dem regimes seek dominance over all other nations, endless wars of aggression and other dirty tactics used to achieve their aims - at the expense of world peace and stability.

In July and again this month, the Trump regime sought to impose new sanctions on North Korea. Russia and China blocked both attempts through the Security Council. Both countries want sanctions on the DPRK eased, not tightened.

Washington demands maximum pressure, full denuclearization and compliance with other US demands before agreeing to ease unjustifiable restrictions on Pyongyang.

In blocking the Trump regime’s latest attempted harshness against North Korea through the Security Council, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the following:

Moscow “blocked the US bid at UN Security Council 1718 Committee on imposing international sanctions on one individual and several legal entities, including Russia’s Agrosoyuz commercial bank, allegedly operating illegally in violation of the sanctions regime in relation to that country,” adding:

“The body of evidence presented by the Americans to substantiate its proposal is entirely unconvincing.”

New proposed US sanctions “fail to improve the atmosphere of Russian-US relation,s and run counter to the logic of detente concerning North Korea.”

“Such a destructive course for settling the problems of the Korean peninsula causes utter rejection.”

“Rejection is also caused by” Washington wanting its demands met “without due regard to the opinion of other” SC member states.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry slammed the Trump regime, saying its government is still waiting for Washington to begin instituting what was agreed on during Kim Jong-un/Trump June 12 summit talks.

“(T)he US responded to our expectation by inciting international sanctions and pressure against the DPRK,” it stressed, “attempting to invent a pretext for increased sanctions against the DPRK.”

“As long as the US denies even the basic decorum for its dialogue partner and clings to the outdated acting script which the previous administrations have all tried and failed, one cannot expect any progress in the implementation of the DPRK-US joint statement, including the denuclearization.”

The DPRK showed good faith by ceasing its nuclear and ballistic missile tests, along with dismantling its nuclear test site.

In return, the Trump regime offered nothing but unacceptable hardline demands - proving it has no intention of observing summit principles agreed on, further proof it can never be trusted.

On a visit to Colombia, neocon extremist Nikki Haley disgracefully blamed North Korea for irresponsible US actions against its government.

Trump regime hardliners want efforts to normalize US/DPRK relations sabotaged. They want hostility toward Pyongyang maintained.

They want principles agreed to during Kim/Trump summit talks ignored. They abhor the idea of US goodwill with any sovereign independent nation.

The US State and Treasury Departments, along with DHS’ Border Protection (CBP) and ICE’s North Korea Sanctions & Enforcement Actions Advisory calls for maintaining hardline US policies against the DPRK.

They reject a formal end to the 1950s war on the peninsula. They want North Korea transformed into another US vassal state, part of Washington’s campaign to isolate China.

Last week at the ASEAN Regional Forum in Singapore, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho said “(w)hen the US enables us to trust the country and get close up, we will be able to open up to the US and show that through our actions.”

This objective has been unattainable since the 1950s war ended in an uneasy armistice on July 27, 1953.
