UN Chief Guterres Opposes Syria’s Liberation

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

With few exceptions, serving as UN secretary general requires the appointee selling his soul to Washington. No woman ever held the post so far.

Chosen by the US to serve its interests like most of his predecessors, notably Ban ki-Moon and Kofi Annan,

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is a reliable imperial tool, flagrantly violating UN Charter principles and other international law, disgracing the office he holds.

He opposes Syria’s liberation, ignoring US-led aggression and support for ISIS, al-Nusra, and other terrorists - used as imperial foot soldiers against the country’s legitimate government, responsible for countless numbers of atrocities throughout the war, supported and encouraged by Washington.

Since 2014, they’ve been aided by Pentagon-led terror-bombing, responsible for massacring countless thousands of civilians and destroying vital infrastructure - high crimes of war and against humanity, Guterres consistently ignores, complicit by silence, supporting what demands condemnation and accountability.

Ahead of the vital Syrian ground offensive to liberate Idlib province, the last major US-supported terrorist stronghold in the country, Guterres repeated Trump’s earlier warning against “recklessly attack(ing) Idlib,” adding:

“The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Guterres said it’s “absolutely essential” to avoid a full-scale offensive - ignoring that nothing less can succeed in eliminating the US-supported terrorist scourge in the province.

On the wrong side of the conflict since taking office in January 2017, Guterres called on Russia, Iran and Turkey to continue pursuing diplomacy to prevent escalation, adding:

“(W)ithout a strong commitment of all these parties, we could be moving into a situation that would lead to the kind of massive battle that would have unpredictable consequences.”

Heavily armed and supported by the West, Israel, and their imperial partners, terrorists infesting Idlib reject diplomatic conflict resolution. Combat is the only way to eliminate them. Nothing else can work.

The mother of all battles since March 2011 US-launched aggression looms. Much rides on its outcome.

Guterres ignored US-led aggression in the country, support for ISIS and other terrorists by the Obama and Trump regimes, NATO, Israel and their imperial partners.

He criticized Syrian forces involved in combatting US-supported terrorists, their right to self-defense, affirmed under Security Council Resolution 2401 and other international law.

He’s been silent about flagrant US/NATO/Israeli/Saudi, UAE violations of SC Res. 2254, calling for ceasefire and diplomatic resolution to years of conflict - Obama’s war, continued endlessly by Trump.

Last month, a statement issued through his spokesman opposed Syrian efforts to liberate Idlib from US-supported terrorists, saying:

“The Secretary-General urgently appeals to the Government of Syria and all parties to exercise restraint and to prioritize the protection of civilians.”

He’s been silent about an impending CW false flag to be wrongfully blamed on Damascus, used as a pretext for greater US, UK, French terror-bombing of Syrian sites.

He ignored Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muellem, saying al-Qaeda-linked White Helmets kidnapped 44 Idlib children, intending to use them as CW false flag props.

He failed to explain that Damascus eliminated its entire CW stockpile, never used these weapons any time during years of war, successfully liberating areas controlled by US-supported terrorists using conventional weapons alone.

Separately he tweeted: “A full-scale battle in Syria’s Idlib province will create a humanitarian nightmare unlike any seen in this blood-soaked conflict.”

He ignored the parties responsible for war in Syria, creating deplorable conditions, Russia, Iran, Damascus, and Hezbollah are courageously combatting to alleviate.

A Final Comment

On Tuesday, Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev said “Russia and other guarantor states are exerting all possible efforts to solve the issue of Idlib with the least possible losses along with guaranteeing the safety of civilians.”

He stressed the necessity of eliminating the scourge of terrorism in Syria entirely - saying combatting them will continue until their presence in the country is gone.
