Trump Locked and Loaded for Greater Aggression on Syria

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

It’s just a matter of time before it’s coming, false flag pretexts easy to stage, more virtually certain to come. They’re a longstanding US tradition.

Washington and its imperial allies have been waging naked aggression on Syria for over seven years, terror-bombing for four years this September - the rape and destruction of Raqqa the most heinous example, massacring countless thousands of civilians.

Overnight Friday, Trump escalated things further, dangerously pushing the envelope, based on a Big Lie, likely a warmup for more of the same to come.

Expect next time to be harsher, perhaps all-out war Washington’s end game in Syria, a desperate bid to save its regional imperial project - foiled by Russia’s intervention at Assad’s behest.

So far the Kremlin only challenged US aggression diplomatically - a strategy failing every time tried with undemocratic Dem and Republican administrations.

On Fox News Sunday, neocon lunatic fringe US UN envoy Nikki Haley said the Trump administration is “locked and loaded” (for further aggression) if the empire again accuses Assad of using CWs - no evidence needed, guilt by accusation enough.

Trump reportedly used an Office of Legal Council opinion as justification for unjustifiable overnight Friday attacks on Syria - similar to Bush/Cheney administration torture memos, drafted by deputy assistant attorney general John Yoo, signed by assistant attorney general Jay Bybee, authorizing what international law prohibits at all times, under all circumstances with no allowed exceptions.

Naked aggression is the highest of high crimes. Washington’s geopolitical agenda prioritizes it time and again, the world community doing nothing to challenge its ruthlessness.

During Security Council debate, Russia’s UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya blasted what he called an “illegal military adventure…hooliganism in international relations,” adding:

Washington has “nothing but disdain for the UN Charter and the Security Council”- doing whatever it pleases, flagrantly violating international law.

During the session, US Secretary-General Antonio Guterres embarrassed himself like many times before during his short tenure.

He’s an imperial tool, disdainful of rule of law principles, supporting imperial lawlessness by failing to oppose it, disgracefully urging member states to “show restraint in these dangerous circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate matters and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people” - failing to denounce US-led naked aggression on a nation threatening no one.

He went along with the CW Big Lie instead of exposing it, saying “(a) lack of accountability emboldens those who would use such weapons by providing them with the reassurance of impunity.”

Like most of his predecessors, he disgraces the office he holds.

On Saturday, Russia’s ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov tweeted: “Our warnings have been left unheard. A pre-designed scenario (was) implemented” - defying facts on the ground and international law, adding:

“We are being threatened. We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences.”

Washington, Britain and France bear full responsibility for escalated naked aggression.

Israel has an undeclared arsenal of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. America maintains the world’s largest stockpile of these weapons.

Syria has none. Overnight Friday aggression had nothing to do with Washington’s stated purpose, everything to do with attempting to regain the initiative in Syria from Russia, along with punishing both countries for foiling US Middle East plans.

Washington’s post-9/11 geopolitical agenda mirrors what’s happening at home, fundamental freedoms eroding, heading toward disappearing altogether, militarized police enforcing growing tyranny, media proliferating state-sponsored propaganda, while endless wars of aggression rage in multiple theaters with likely more to come.

Regimes in Washington under undemocratic Dems and Republicans are hellbent for destroying free societies globally - at home and abroad.

The nation I grew up in long ago no longer exists. Though deeply flawed from inception and when I was a boy and youth, it paled in comparison to what James Petras calls today’s “empire built on fear at home and abroad.”

He gave numerous examples of what’s going on, today’s harsh reality, things steadily worsening, I believe, a slippery slope toward unthinkable consequences.

America already is unsafe and unfit to live in. A bipartisan conspiracy against peace, equity and justice threatens everyone everywhere.

Washington’s ruling class is ruthless and lawless, gambling humanity’s fate on achieving its objectives, most Americans mindless of what’s going on - why the nation’s leadership gets away with mass murder, neoliberal harshness and much more.

If things continue on their destructive course unchallenged, the next generation too young to understand may not have a world to grow up in.
