Trump Falsely Accuses China of Meddling in US Midterm Elections

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Last week, Trump absurdly tweeted: “China is “actively trying to impact and change” the election “by attacking our farmers, ranchers and industrial workers because of their loyalty to me.”

In response, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang denounced the false accusation, stressing China doesn’t illegally meddle in the internal affairs of other countries - a US specialty worldwide.

At the same time, the Trump regime ordered Chinese state-run Xinhua News Agency and Global Television Network to register as foreign agents in the US.

The same hostile policy was used against Russia last year. RT was forced to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

An FBI probe of Sputnik News was ordered to check for FARA violations that don’t exist.

FARA is a pre-WW II relic, targeting hostile NAZI Germany propaganda, requiring agents representing foreign powers politically or quasi-politically to disclose their relationship with other governments, along with information about their activities and finances.

Targeting legitimate Russian and Chinese media violates the letter and spirit of the law, an assault on their press freedom, a flagrant First Amendment violation.

The same thing is going on against independent US media, especially online, waging war on digital democracy. Growing censorship threatens it.

On Wednesday, Trump repeated his fabricated accusation. During a Security Council session, he falsely claimed “we found that China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election…in November against my administration,” adding:

“They do not want me or us to win because I am the first president ever to challenge China on trade.”

Asked what evidence backs his claim, he said “plenty” without providing any because none exists.

In response, Beijing’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi denounced the false accusation, saying “(w)e do not and will not interfere in any countries’ domestic affairs,” adding:

“We refuse to accept any unwarranted accusations against China, and we call on other countries to also observe the purposes of the UN charter and not interfere in other countries’ internal affairs.”

No evidence suggests Russia, China, or any other countries have interfered in America’s political process or intend to - what the US has done scores of time worldwide post-WW II - a serial meddler in the affairs of other countries.

Separately during his Security Council remarks, Trump falsely blamed Russia and Iran for US-led high crimes in Syria - raging endlessly without resolution.

He threatened escalated sanctions war on the Islamic Republic - despite nearly 40 years of hostile policies against the country achieving nothing but harm to its ordinary people.

Accusations of “malign conduct” apply to Washington and its imperial partners, not Tehran.

Trump came close to falsely accusing Iran of a clandestine Iranian nuclear weapons program that doesn’t exist - at the same time ignoring nuclear armed and dangerous Israel, the only regional state with these WMDs, perhaps likely to use them one day.

He accused unnamed nations of violating UN sanctions on North Korea, suggesting Russia and China are perhaps circumventing what never should have been imposed in the first place - and now should be eliminated entirely.

Saying he’s ready to meet with Kim Jong-un, Putin, and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ignores the fact Washington doesn’t negotiate.

It demands, wanting its interests served in return for promises consistently broken.

World leaders believing Washington can be trusted are foolhardy. Time and again other nations are betrayed.

Hegemons operate the same way, good faith not one of their attributes.

America has interests, not allies, pressuring, bullying, bribing and threatening other nations to get its way - staging color revolutions, coups, and political assassinations, waging wars of aggression when other tactics fail.
