Syria Peace Talks

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Multiple earlier Geneva rounds failed because of unacceptable demands by opposition delegates involved.

They remain much the same, a prescription for failure again. Syria’s delegation delayed its departure for Geneva because of opposition insistence that Assad step down - an unacceptable demand.

Talks may collapse before they begin. The upcoming Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, Russia may fare no better - Saudi-backed opposition delegates perhaps unwilling to participate.

Syria and allied forces, greatly aided by Russian aerial operations, liberated most of the country. They’ve got leverage in upcoming talks - if they occur as planned with a chance to make a difference.

Their outcome remains dubious because Washington, NATO, Israel, Saudi Arabia and their rogue allies demand regime change.

Syrians overwhelmingly support Assad, wanting no one else leading them. New elections if held will affirm his popularity.

He’ll remain Syria’s president as long as he retains his popular mandate, along with wanting to continue on the job - a challenging one in a tough neighborhood with war still ongoing on his homeland.

Days earlier, his political/media advisor Bouthiana Shaaban called on terrorist fighters to lay down their arms and engage in peace talks.

Interviewed in early November on al-Mayadeen television, she called Syria the Arab world’s main pillar. The country is emerging from years of war, she explained.

Conditions are slowly improving, reconstruction begun in Aleppo and Homs. She believes Israel won’t risk aggression under current conditions.

If attacked, Syria will defend itself as it’s done since early 2011, defending its sovereignty against hostile invaders, US-supported terrorists.

Commenting on upcoming peace talks in Sochi, she said Syria will always be proactive in seeking to resolve the ongoing conflict. Its delegation will attend the Russian-sponsored event.

Calling the presence of US and Turkish forces in the country illegal - she said it’ll be dealt with at the right time, adding Washington and its rogue coalition partners raped and destroyed Raqqa, Western media largely silent on the atrocity.

America, NATO and other Syrian opposition forces pretend to want conflict resolution - while obstructing it.

Reuters quoted former Dutch diplomat Nikolaos Van Dam, author of two books on Syria, turning truth on its head, saying Assad “doesn’t want to really negotiate.”

He “want(s) to reconquer every inch of Syrian territory and then negotiate. But then the opposition would have no bargaining chips.”

They have few now - other than making unacceptable demands to obstruct talks, assuring failure again, and continuing aggression against the sovereign Syrian state.

The country was invaded by US-supported terrorists, supported since 2014 by Pentagon terror-bombing, along with its so-called “coalition” partners.

Syrian land belongs to Syrians alone. They have every right to fight for and liberate every part of the country, freeing it from US-supported terrorists.

Its negotiating demands fully comply with Security Council resolutions and other international law - polar opposite how Washington operates.

Self-defense when attacked is a universal right. Assad vowed his country will be liberated from terrorists it’s been combating for nearly seven years.
