Security Council Ceasefire Resolution in Syria

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Since the Obama administration launched naked aggression on Syria in March 2011, using ISIS and other terrorists as imperial foot soldiers, numerous Security Council resolutions were adopted to try restoring peace and stability to the country.

They include the unanimously adopted SC Res. 2254 (December 2015), calling for ceasefire and diplomatic settlement of the near-five year conflict at the time.

Two years later, peace remains elusive because Washington, NATO, Israel and their imperial allies want endless war and regime change, not resolution to years of conflict.

On February 24, Security Council members unanimously adopted SC Res. 2401 - demanding “all parties cease hostilities without delay and engage immediately to ensure full and comprehensive implementation of this demand by all parties, for a durable humanitarian pause for at least 30 consecutive days throughout Syria.”

The ceasefire is to enable “safe, unimpeded and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid and services and medical evacuations of the critically sick and wounded, in accordance with applicable international law.”

The resolution excludes combat operations against ISIS, al-Nusra, and groups associated with them.

SC Res. 2254 and other SC efforts to end conflict were flagrantly violated straightaway by US-supported terrorists and Pentagon-led terror-bombing on the phony pretext of combating ISIS Washington supports, notably the US-led rape and destruction of Raqqa (June - October 2017), massacring thousands of civilians, turning the city to smoldering rubble.

Will things be different this time? Will Washington and its rogue allies stop supporting ISIS, al-Nusra and other terrorists?

Will they abandon their regime change objective? Will they finally cooperate with Russia and Damascus to restore peace and stability to the country?

Will they responsibly do what they never did before? All previous SC efforts to end conflict failed. It’s foolhardy to believe this time is different.

Syrian UN envoy Bashar al-Jaafari stressed his government will continue defending its territory and “fight terrorism wherever it is” - essential to do to restore peace and stability to the country one day.

Russian UN envoy Vasily Nebenzia “insist(ed) on the immediate cessation of the occupation attitude of the so-called coalition, which will have, among other things, a distinct humanitarian effect.”

“It would allow the Syrian government to engage in the restoration of a normal life on all territories, liberated from the terrorists,” adding:

It’s vital that Res. 2401 not be interpreted freely. He “express(ed) deep concern over the public statements of certain US officials who are threatening aggression against sovereign Syria.”

“We immediately warn that we will not allow an arbitrary interpretation of the newly adopted resolution” following its adoption.

“It would be naive to think that internal Syrian questions can be solved by a resolution” given Washington’s imperial objectives.

Indeed so. Seven years of US-led aggression show its aim to replace Syria’s legitimate government with pro-Western puppet rule remains unchanged.

Will SC Res. 2401 turn a page for restoring peace and stability to the country?

Aggressor hegemons aren’t peacemakers - not in Syria or anywhere else!
