Racist Reporter Hired by the NYT

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

The self-styled newspaper of record further blackened its odious record by hiring racist reporter Sarah Jeong - exposed by her tweets, including:

“Oh man it’s kind of sick how much joy I get out of being cruel to old white men,”

“Dumbass f..king white people marking up the internet with their opinions like dogs pissing on fire hydrants,” and

“#CancelWhitePeople.”

Her public apology was unconvincing, claiming her remarks were intended as “satire.”

She now “regret(s) mimick(ing) the language of (her) harassers,” promising never again to make comments like the above ones.

They were unacceptable for any reason. On August 1, the NYT announced her hiring via Twitter a follows:

“.@SarahJeong joins NYT’s editorial board. She’s the newest in a fab group of recent additions to @nytopinion.”

A NYT statement on her hiring said the following:

She was hired “because of (her) exceptional (online) work,” adding:

“Her journalism and the fact that she is a young Asian woman have made her a subject of frequent online harassment.”

“For a period of time she responded to that harassment by imitating the rhetoric of her harassers.”

“She sees now that this approach only served to feed the vitriol that we too often see on social media.”

“She understands that this type of rhetoric is not acceptable at The Times, and we are confident that she will be an important voice for the editorial board moving forward.”

Jeong’s remarks revealed her racist views, the Times indicated it was aware of, calling them “old tweets.”

Yet she was hired anyway, the Times saying “she would stay on the editorial board” as its “lead technology writer…”

Shortly after joining the Times’ editorial board last February to write on culture and technology issues, the Times fired Quinn Norton because of her racist and homophobic tweets - OK for Jeong, unacceptable for Norton. The double standard needs no elaboration.

Jeong will fit right in with other Times proliferators of disinformation, Big Lies, and fake news in support of wealth, power and privileged interests at the expense of peace, equity and justice.
