US Quits Human Rights Council

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Months earlier, the Trump regime threatened to leave the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).

Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned America might withdraw if the HRC didn’t undertake “considerable reform” - code language for ceasing criticism of Israel no matter how egregious its high crimes.

Commenting on Israel’s preemptive 2014 Gaza war, HRC investigator Makarim Wibisono accused its regime of “deliberately” targeting civilian homes, massacring Palestinians in cold blood, explaining “ten children died every day over a period of 50 days.”

In dealing with peaceful Palestinian protestors, he called Israeli soldiers “trigger happy.”

America was the only HRC member to vote against an earlier resolution, criticizing Israel for terrorizing Syrians in illegally occupied Golan.

Other HRC resolutions supported Palestinian self-determination, opposed illegal Israeli settlements, criticized its human rights abuses, and called for its withdrawal to territory within pre-June 1967 lines - 22% of historic Palestine.

Washington one-sidedly supports  the Jewish state, partnering in its wars, ignoring its flagrant human rights abuses, disgracefully accusing the HRC of anti-Israeli bias.

In early June, neocon extremist Nikki Haley raged against justifiable criticism of flagrant Israeli human rights abuses, unjustifiably calling it “chronic anti-Israel bias,” adding:

“The United States is looking carefully at this Council and our participation in it,” suggesting a US pullout. Bush/Cheney boycotted the HRC for three years. Obama rejoined it in 2009.

On Tuesday, Washington again pulled out of the organization. Secretary of State Pompeo said the following:

“The Trump administration is committed to protecting and promoting the God-given dignity and freedom of every human being…For decades, the United States has led global efforts to promote human rights, often through multilateral institutions.”

Both claims are bald-faced lies. No nation in world history has done more harm to more people over a longer duration than America - beginning before the republic was established.

It’s more ruthless today than ever at home and abroad, waging political, economic, propaganda and hot war on humanity, seeking global dominance by brute force.

Ignoring the savage truth, Pompeo lied saying HRC’s “bias against Israel is unconscionable.”

He lied claiming America “leads the world in humanitarian assistance, and whose service members have sacrificed life and limb to free millions from oppression and tyranny.”

Washington’s ruthless agenda is polar opposite his outrageous claim.

Haley blasted the HRC, calling it “a cesspool of political bias” toward Israel, disgracefully claiming the Jewish state “has a strong human rights record,” - a bald-faced lies on two counts, adding:

“(T)he United States is officially withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council,” largely for “chronic bias against Israel,” for “singl(ing) out (the Jewish state) in a way that no other country is singled out” - for truth-telling about the country’s egregious human rights abuses Washington wants ignored, Haley failed to explain.

Her idea of HRC “reform” is excluding Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and other sovereign independent nations America doesn’t control from membership in the organization - allowing in only US allies, no matter how egregious their human rights record.

Netanyahu thanked Washington for its “bold decision.” UN human rights high commissioner Zeid bin Raad al-Hussein criticized the Trump regime’s appalling mistreatment of undocumented immigrant families, separating children from parents, virtually imprisoning kids under harsh conditions, saying:

“The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable” - calling the practice “government-sanctioned child abuse,” causing “irreparable harm” to victims.

Hussein ignored Washington’s most egregious human rights abuses, its wars of aggression causing millions of casualties, raping and destroying countries, its imperial rage for global dominance at the expense of world peace and stability, its neoliberal harshness, its worldwide gulag prison system, its transformation of America into a police state.

The American way is hostile to human rights, other fundamental freedoms, along with affording everyone equity and justice.

Pompeo, Haley and other neocon extremists infesting Washington represent humanity’s greatest threat. We’re all doomed if their ruthless agenda isn’t challenged and stopped.
