Pentagon Directed Terrorist Attack on Russia’s Syria Airbase

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Washington considers Russia its main adversary. Longstanding US hostility toward the country is unbending.

Regime change is America’s objective, wanting pro-Western puppet rule replacing Russia’s sovereign independence, risking war between the world’s dominant nuclear powers to try achieving its objective, madness by any standard.

How much more US hostility toward Russia will its leadership tolerate before declaring unacceptable red lines were crossed?

What’ll will it take for Putin, Lavrov, and other top Russian officials to stop pretending Washington is Moscow’s partner?

Both governments are on opposite sides of US-launched war in Syria. Differences between them are world’s apart.

When will Moscow blast Washington for naked aggression and supporting ISIS, al-Qaeda, its al-Nusra offshoot, and other regional terrorist groups, using them as imperial proxies to pursue its objectives?

When will it blame the US, NATO, Turkey, and the Saudis for staging false flag CW attacks, wrongfully blamed on Damascus?

When will it stop tolerating US, NATO, Turkish and Israeli aggression in Syria? When will it stop being Mr. nice guy in the face of US-led political, economic, financial and propaganda war on Russia, heading toward direct confrontation if not challenged and stopped?

Bilateral relations are more dismal than during the height of the Cold War - deteriorating, not improving.

Surrounding Russia with US military bases, falsely accusing the Kremlin of things it had nothing to do with, imposing illegal sanctions, seizing its properties, expelling its diplomats, conducting provocative military exercises near its borders, and directing terrorist drone attacks on its Khmeimim Syria airbase risks war between both countries.

According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, a US P-8 Poseidon spy plane directed a terrorist drone attack on its Syrian airbase last January - likely all others Russian air defense systems foiled.

Deputy Russian Defense Minister General Alexander Fomin said a Pentagon spy plane operated in the area last January when 13 terrorist drones tried attacking the Khmeimim airbase.

After the facility’s electronic warfare capability disrupted their control signals, the P-8 Poseidon took over control of the drones, directing their foiled attack.

“They were controlled manually, and not by some peasant, but from a capable, well-equipped Poseidon plane,” most likely using satellite data before destroyed by Russia’s state-of-the-art air defense capabilities, Fomin explained.

Since US-supported terrorists tried attacking the Russian airbase in early 2018, its Defense Ministry knew Washington’s dirty hands were behind the incidents, but refrained from public accusations.

Fomin for the first time went public, blaming the US for aiding an attack on its airbase - an act of war by the Trump regime on Russia, demanding a firm response short of starting WW III.

Letting the US get away with these stunts encourages more of them, including greater belligerence than already.

On Thursday during her weekly press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharov confirmed Fomin’s accusation, saying:

“We received this absolutely credible information from our military specialists. We have repeatedly voiced our concerns about this.”

It’ll take a much tougher response to get the attention of Trump regime hardliners. The only language they understand is force, diplomacy with the US a waste of time.

Unless confronted firmly, they’ll continue pursuing Washington’s imperial agenda unimpeded, Moscow’s readiness to improve ties seen as weakness, not strength.

The prospect for better bilateral relations is nil, not as long as bipartisan US hardliners control Congress and the executive branch - militantly hostile to Moscow, their recklessness risking global war.
