The NYT Endorses Endless US Warmaking, Scorns Peace

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

NATO is a US-controlled killing machine, an imperial tool. The alliance operates by Washington rules, serving its interests, waging endless wars of aggression against sovereign independent nations threatening no one.

World peace and stability are unattainable as long as NATO exists – solely for offense, not defense, especially since Soviet Russia dissolved, inventing enemies to unjustifiably justify its existence, mainly Russia, China, and Iran, these countries threatening no one. US hardliners pretend otherwise.

NATO includes 29 member nations, 21 Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) ones, seven Mediterranean Dialogue countries, and four Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) states.

They comprise nearly one-third of world nations. NATO plans exponential expansion, seeking new members and partners on all continents, wanting the alliance operating as a US-controlled global policeman.

Its key objective is eliminating all sovereign independent governments, transforming nations everywhere into US vassal states, what Washington’s aim for global dominance is all about.

US dominated NATO is the mortal enemy of world peace, stability and security. The NYT is the sworn enemy of truth-telling journalism the way it should be on vital issues, especially geopolitical ones.

The self-styled newspaper of record earlier lied, calling NATO “the anchor of Western security (sic).(Its) nations mostly democracies (sic) with vibrant free markets (sic) have helped America keep enemies (sic) at bay…”

Fantasy democracies comprise NATO, not legitimate ones. So-called “free markets” aren’t fair, serving monied interests exclusively at the expense of the general welfare, exploiting people for profit, inventing enemies because real ones don’t exist.

Candidate Trump called NATO “obsolete,” a Cold War relic. As president, he expressed support for the alliance, demanding other members pay more of the financial cost.

Last July, he said “I’ll do my own thing” if other NATO states don’t meet the 2% of GDP target for military spending by 2024 - at a time when the alliance should be disbanded and global military spending slashed, money saved used for vital domestic needs.

Not according to the NYT, calling the “idea that the United States could withdraw from NATO…surreal,” adding:

“It continues to keep a predatory Russia (sic) at bay” - a bald-faced Big Lie, predation a US specialty. Among major nations, Russia is the leading advocate of world peace and stability, in stark contrast to Washington’s permanent war agenda, the NYT in lockstep cheerleading it.

Last week, the undemocratic Dem-led House voted 357 - 22 to prohibit use of federal funds to withdraw from NATO. Not a single Dem opposed the measure, dispelling the myth of progressive membership, 22 didn’t vote along with 28 Republicans.

Last week, Trump said “(w)e will be with NATO 100%, but as I told the countries, you have to step up,” defense spending.

Senate members will vote on a similar measure, likely to pass overwhelmingly and be reconciled with the House bill.

There’s virtually no possibility of the US leaving NATO in the foreseeable future. Legislation will likely require a two-thirds congressional majority for a US president to withdraw from the alliance - the power of the purse alone to prevent it if the executive goes it on his own.

Times hawkishness and turning truth on its head are clear, saying “(i)t seems obvious that leaving NATO would be a foreign policy debacle, eroding American influence in Europe and emboldening Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader, who wants to weaken NATO so he can expand his political and military sway.”

Putin has no revanchist aims, unlike how the US operates. Instead of forthrightly supporting world peace, stability, and dissolution of an alliance for warmaking, the Times is firmly on the wrong side of history, the way it usually operates.

Earlier the Times got it wrong claiming NATO “fostered Western prosperity and prevented new world wars.”

The US-dominated alliance is the greatest threat to world peace, nuclear war possible, maybe likely or inevitable as long as NATO exists and expands to every continent.

Disbanding the alliance may be the only way to save humanity “from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind” - next time perhaps to eliminate it altogether if global war occurs.
