North Korea Rejects Unacceptable US Denuclearization Demands

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Washington negotiates one-way - demanding everything, offering nothing in return but empty promises.

Time and again, bilateral talks turn out the same way, proving the US can never be trusted.

Reportedly, North Korea rejected US “gangster-like” denuclearization demands.

Despite its good faith efforts pursued according to principles agreed on during June 12 Kim Jong-un/Trump summit talks, Trump regime hardliners failed to take steps to fulfill their end of the deal reached.

On August 9, a DPRK Foreign Ministry press release said the following:

“Whereas we already took such practical denuclearization steps as discontinuing nuclear test and ICBM test fire, followed by dismantling the nuclear test ground since the end of July, the US insisted on its unilateral demand of ‘denuclearization first’ ” before complying with agreed on summit principles.

“We hoped…goodwill measures would contribute to breaking down the high barrier of mistrust existing between the DPRK and the US, and to establishing mutual trust.”

Instead, the Trump regime “responded to our expectation by (calling for more harsh) international sanctions and pressure against the DPRK.”

High-level US officials “fabricate(d) all kinds of falsehoods on our nuclear issue,” heightening tensions instead of easing them.

“A long as the US” acts irresponsibly, “one cannot expect any progress in the implementation of the DPRK-US joint” agreement.

Nor can there be any guarantee that “hard-won…stability on the Korean Peninsula will continue.”

“We remain unchanged in our will to uphold the intentions of the top leaders…and to build trust and implement (them) in good faith…”

It’s up to the Trump regime to act the same way, what it failed to do so far, and shows no intention of pursuing improved bilateral relations - just the opposite.

Neocon extremists Mike Pompeo and John Bolton are responsible for undermining US implementation of June 12 summit principles, not Trump - falsely blaming Pyongyang for their obstructionism.

In talks with North Korean officials, Pompeo reportedly demanded the DPRK eliminate about two-thirds of its nuclear weapons in six to eight months, offering nothing substantive in return.

North Korea wants reciprocal good faith from Washington in return for its own.

It wants security guarantees, unacceptable sanctions lifted, a formal end to the 1950s war, and normalized relations with Washington, its regional neighbors, and the world community.

All of the above have been unattainable since the Korean peninsula was divided post-WW II.

The US is all take and no give. Nothing suggests Trump regime hardliners will change longstanding US hostility toward the DPRK.

Summit talks achieved nothing - proof again that US promises aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.
