US Humanitarian Intervention in Venezuela?

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

So-called humanitarian intervention is a convenient pretext for US wars of aggression, the results predicable time and again.

They include mass slaughter and destruction, endless chaos, environmental contamination, and human misery, nations transformed into dystopian wastelands, countless millions affected.

Venezuelans are enduring a dystopian nightmare because of Washington’s rage to transform Bolivarian social democracy into a “free market” paradise for corporate predators to freely plunder, wanting the nation’s wealth shifted abroad and to its privileged class, the worst of neoliberal harshness for ordinary people, police state repression for nonbelievers.

The Trump regime, in cahoots with designated usurper in waiting Juan Guaido and likeminded extremist elements in the country, aim to deliver Trojan horse humanitarian aid - a likely scheme to try smuggling in weapons for greater violence, casualties and chaos than already.

On Monday, President Maduro denounced the scheme, saying “(t)hey want to humiliate the people of Venezuela” with alleged humanitarian aid. “Nothing’s going to get in,” calling the US scheme a pretext for invasion.

Pompeo proposed $20 million in so-called aid for a nation of 32 million people, amounting to virtually nothing if legitimate aid instead of a disruptive political stunt.

Bolton demanded Maduro “get out of the way” for what the Trump regime has in mind. The irony is breathtaking.

The US and its imperial partners are starving millions of Yemenis to the brink of death by endless war and blockade - while pretending to care about Venezuelans suffering from its economic, financial, and sanctions war, ordinary Trump regime hardliners don’t give a damn about anywhere, including in America.

Colombia and Brazil are in cahoots with the phony US aid scheme. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza slammed what’s going on, saying:

“Those who wage unjust wars in the world, devastate innocent civilian populations, subject economies to blockades, cause death, hunger, destruction and suffering, then label their actions as HUMANITARIAN. There is nothing more INHUMAN and cynical than imperialism.”

The Red Cross said it won’t participate in Trump’s scheme because of its “fundamental principles of impartiality, neutrality and independence.”

Catholic charities in Venezuela are concerned about involvement in politicized aid. The CIA, National Endowment for Democracy (against it everywhere) and USAID are likely part of the scheme.

Maduro’s UN envoy Jorge Valero accused the Trump regime of using so-called “humanitarian assistance as a pretext for unleashing war, which may have catastrophic humanitarian consequences,” adding:

“Venezuela is a sovereign country that is capable of restoring its economy by implementing its own projects, which have been developed by President Maduro.”

The scheme is a cynical stunt at a time the Trump regime wants Venezuela’s legitimate government toppled by coup d’etat, Guaido a convenient stooge, a nobody wannabe usurper in waiting.

Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry accused the Trump regime of wanting to re-colonize the country, using an illegitimate puppet regime to plunder its resources and exploit its people, saying:

“Trump’s recolonization is the right description of what has progressively become a plan for a military invasion of Venezuela by the United States. An event never before seen in our history,” adding:

In the face of a US-manufactured “non-existent reality in Venezuela…(t)he Constitutional Government of President Nicolas Maduro is, as it has always been, in full and effective control of the national territory. The Venezuelan State’s institutions are functioning normally, in accordance with our Constitution.”

“The majority of the region supports our territorial integrity and a political solution without foreign interference and without a military invasion.”

The Trump regime’s scheme “is without any basis in our National Constitution…(It) represents an attack against the democratic institutions of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and a usurpation, not just of the constitutional powers of President Maduro, who was reelected for the 2019-2025 term, but also of the will of the Venezuelan people who, through a universal, direct and secret vote, freely elected him in a vote held on May 20, 2018.”

“(O)n January 23, 2018, there was (an attempted) coup d’etat in Venezuela, promoted, organized and financed by the government of the United States, with a small group of countries from our region and Europe.”

The scheme aims to replace the “democratic order in Venezuela (with US) impose(d) dictatorial government” - Latin and Central America’s longstanding curse, Washington the region’s scourge.

It wants Big Oil able to loot Venezuela’s world’s largest reserves. It wants the national wealth stolen, its people exploited as serfs.

It’s contemptuous of what rule of law principles and democratic values are all about, notions it finds abhorrent, deterrents to its imperial aims.

Two weeks after puppet Guaido pronounced himself interim president, the Trump regime’s coup attempt hasn’t so far gained enough traction to succeed.

Whatever plays out in the weeks and months ahead, crisis in Venezuela will continue - things worst of all if Maduro is toppled. The alternative is brutalizing fascist tyranny.

If installed by military intervention, Venezuela could become another Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, or Yemen - mired in endless conflict and bloodshed.
