Dueling Netanyahu/Iranian Foreign Minister Addresses in Munich

by Stephen Lendman

Netanyahu heads Israel’s most extremist ever government - exceeding Sharonian evil.

He represents ruthless state terror, severe occupation harshness, and contempt for rule of law principles - deploring peace and stability, contemptuous of Palestinian rights, pathologically obsessed with anti-Iran rage.

Tehran’s governance shames Israel’s sham system - a Ziofascist police state masquerading as democratic.

In Munich, Netanyahu despicably compared Iran to Nazi Germany, a characterization applicable to Israel, not the Islamic Republic, the region’s dominant peace advocate.

He lied saying “Iran looks to destroy Israel and is developing ballistic missiles that can also reach Europe and the US. Once nuclear-armed, Iran will be unchecked.”

Nuclear-armed and dangerous Israel is the region’s greatest threat, along with America’s presence - not Iran. It deplores nuclear weapons, wanting them eliminated.

Netanyahu repeated a stunt used in his 2012 General Assembly address, making a fool of himself before a world audience - using a visual aid, displaying a bomb with a lit fuse like in a Road Runner cartoon.

Here’s what I wrote at the time:

His cartoon bomb went viral. It bombed. He looked more cartoonish than his prop.

One cartoonist showed a picture of Daffy Duck’s head exploding. An observer referred to Bibi’s “Clint Eastwood chair” moment.

Another compared his explosive to what Warner Bros.’ animated character Wile E. Coyote used in Looney Tunes cartoons.

A London Guardian commentator said his stunt succeeded but not how he intended. The New Yorker said “the ridiculous deserves ridicule. His “graphic, which he apparently made at Kinkos, is so ridiculous.”

A Washington Post op-ed asked if his stunt was a “poor choice of a ridiculously-looking, over-simplified bomb cartoon (or) a calculated choice (to) create (an) indelible image everyone would be talking about?”

He didn’t consider what they’d say. The Wall Street Journal compared him to Nikita Krushchev’s shoe-banging incident.

The Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation is a national coalition of more 380 groups with thousands of members. It asked: “Bibi, where’s the red line on apartheid?” What’s at stake, of course, is war or peace. Netanyahu’s ‘red line’ bluster wore thin long ago.

In Munich, he was at it again, displaying a piece of scrap metal, saying it’s from a downed Iranian drone.

“Mr. Zarif (Iran’s foreign minister), do you recognize this,” he asked, making a fool of himself again!

“You should. It’s yours,” he blustered. It could have been from his neighbor’s garbage or an Israeli waste dump. “Do not test Israel’s resolve,” he roared.

Israel downed a Syrian drone operating in its own airspace, an act of aggression, falsely claiming it was an Iranian one overflying Israeli territory - a bald-faced lie.

Netanyahu continued his rant, claiming “(t)hrough its proxies - Shiite militias in Iraq, the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza - Iran is devouring huge swaths of the Middle East,” adding:

“Israel will not allow Iran’s regime to put a noose of terror around our neck. We will act without hesitation to defend ourselves. And we will act if necessary not just against Iran’s proxies that are attacking us, but against Iran itself.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif responded courteously without mincing words, saying:

“You were the audience for a cartoonish circus…this morning which does not even deserve the dignity of a response,” adding:

“What has happened in the past several days is that the so-called invincibility (of Israel) has crumbled.”

"Israel uses aggression as a policy against its neighbors, along with mass reprisals against its neighbors and daily incursions into Syria, Lebanon,” Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem Palestinian communities.

“The US (Israel and their regional) clients…are suffering from the natural consequences of their own wrong choices. But they use this and other fora to revive the hysteria on Iran’s foreign policy and obscure its reality. (D)id Iran force them to make all those wrong choices as some of them ridiculously claim?”

“Are we to blame because we were on the right side of history, fighting Saddam Hussein, al-Qaeda, the Taliban, ISIS, al-Nusra and the like, while the US and company were financing, arming and supporting them?

Netanyahu lied. Zarif addressed important hard truths. Differences between them are clear - Israel a serial aggressor along with Washington, Iran a peace champion like Russia.

Judge for yourself from Middle East events and others globally.

Zarif ended his address saying “(a)t a time when we are dangerously close to escalating conflicts that will affect our children and grandchildren, I encourage my counterparts in the Persian Gulf to join Iran in” making peace “a reality” in the region.
