UN Chief and Netanyahu Meet in Munich

by Stephen Lendman

They and other senior officials are at the Munich Security Conference - an annual forum on these issues since 1963, hundreds attending from scores of countries to exchange views.

This year’s conference runs from February 17 - 19. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Sergey Lavrov will address the conference on security issues. So will Defense Secretary Mattis.

Other participants include Theresa May, Iraqi PM Abadi, Ukrainian putschist president Poroshenko, foreign ministers from Iran, Turkey and senior officials from other countries.

US-installed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres one-sidedly supports Israel.

He and most of his predecessors breached UN Charter principles grievously - supporting imperial lawlessness by inaction instead of trying “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind.”

After publishing an important Richard Falk/Virginia Tilley UN report, titled “Israeli Practices towards the Palestinian People and the Question of Apartheid,” discussing how Israel persecutes and dominates defenseless Palestinians, Guterres disgracefully ordered it pulled, instead of praising its accuracy and urging more reports like it.

He met with Netanyahu in Munich, ahead of the start of its security conference, an unindicted war criminal he should have denounced and shunned.

Instead they engaged like friends, Netanyahu saying Israel won’t let Iran “build bases in Syria. We’ll act against that,” adding:

Israel will never relinquish control over illegally annexed Syrian Golan, a move rejected by the international community.

Nor will Israel limit its (illegal) military activity in Syria. Netanyahu intends stressing it when he addresses the conference.

He lied saying he has proof of an Iranian drone downed by Israel in its airspace. Israel downed a Syrian drone in its own airspace, an aggressive action like numerous other Israeli war crimes against Damascus.

Netanyahu is ethically, morally and legally challenged - facing possible indictment for bribery and breach of trust.

Weekly Israeli protests demand he resign, calling him a “crime minister,” his most serious offenses left unaddressed - high crimes of war and against humanity.

The damning Tilley/Falk report on Israeli apartheid provided documented evidence of ruthless Israeli practices, terrorizing Palestinians, committing grave human rights abuses for decades, persecuting them under harsh militarized occupation - their fundamental rights denied.

It “concludes that the weight of the evidence supports beyond a reasonable doubt the proposition that Israel is guilty of imposing an apartheid regime on the Palestinian people, which amounts to the commission of a crime against humanity, the prohibition of which is considered jus cogens in international customary law,” adding:

“The international community, especially the United Nations and its agencies, and Member States, have a legal obligation to act within the limits of their capabilities to prevent and punish instances of apartheid that are responsibly brought to their attention.”

“More specifically, States have a collective duty: (a) not to recognize an apartheid regime as lawful; (b) not to aid or assist a State in maintaining an apartheid regime; and (c) to cooperate with the United Nations and other States in bringing apartheid regimes to an end.”

“Civil society institutions and individuals also have a moral and political duty to use the instruments at their disposal to raise awareness of this ongoing criminal enterprise, and to exert pressure on Israel in order to persuade it to dismantle apartheid structures in compliance with international law.”

The report made important recommendations for change - ignored by the UN and world leaders - complicit with Israeli lawlessness for failing challenge it responsibly.
